Standing Next to You, but we're sitting

Josh and I both first started learning to play music together. Being next door neighbors with nothing better to do, we would learn and write parts together, show each other new cool techniques we saw online, and plan out our future as rockstars. We’d stay up late playing music night after night, and fall asleep to the same Steve Vai video ‘Live at Astoria’. Almost all of my musical DNA comes from those days, and us constantly challenging each other is what really helped establish my passion in music. We formed a band in high school — ‘Lilic’s Last Bloom’ that was heavily inspired by progressive and ‘math’ metal — something that wasn’t super popular at the time. Eventually we’d split up and follow our own paths and stop playing music together, but it’s a time that I have always cherished.

Fast forward to around 2020 — it brought me so much joy to hear you tell me that you were getting back into music. Even though we hadn’t seen each other for many years, I could hear your smile when you would ask for my opinions on gear or talk about the new guitar you got. Every time you would post a video to social media, I couldn’t believe how it felt that no time had passed at all. You kept raving about this band called Intervals, and that we should learn some songs together. While I really wanted to, life kind of got in the way and we never could nail down a time or a song. Unfortunately, that time never came.

I dug up some of your old videos from a few years back and gave a crack at this one. It’s heartbreaking, but this is as close as ‘together’ as we’re going to get now. This is one of the most challenging pieces I’ve learned in quite some time, and I had so much fun pushing myself to learn it. Groups like Intervals are what I’d like to think our music would eventually evolve into if we had kept playing instead of going our separate ways.

Rest easy, brother. I hope we can play together again someday. by @tylerplays__
