8 years ago, the Hillsborough County Animal Shelter planned to euthanize ‘Joey’, a mutt who was owned by sub-human filth that shot him with BBs, let fleas ravage his body, and didn’t even bother to feed him before kicking him out on the street. A day before his scheduled euthanasia, a foster home took him in to buy him some more time to find a forever home. I am forever grateful for that family.

A couple of days after Christmas of 2018 I came home to a strange dog who I figured we were stuck with to watch for the weekend, but it took only a minute for he and I to realize that we were brothers. I will never again see a dog so grateful for a bed to sleep in and a family to love him. He was so smart and loved us so much that it didn’t matter that he couldn’t talk, he could always show us how he felt. He was so muscle-bound and tough we figured that the pound-given name didn’t suit his personality, thus we chose Brutus.

He was so expressive and lively, and he always wanted to make your day. I won’t ever come home without missing the “WOOOOWOOOOWOOO” sound he made when I walked in the door. The following 8 years he became my family’s real home; we didn’t want to come home from work or school to be under a roof, we wanted to go home to Brutus. I now realize this since the house is much less than a home. I would take the pain of losing him 100 times to have another 8 years with him. The past day has felt like 8 years anyway.

If you have met Brutus, I’m sure you will appreciate some of these pictures and if you haven’t you will be able to see how much soul he had and why I call him my brother.

Please, adopt, don’t shop. There are thousands of animals that have suffered enough and are begging to be blessed with a family.
