“Why are you doing this?” This morning I stumbled onto this photo, and it gave me pause to reflect. If you don’t know, the other man in the photo is a friend of mine named Theo, and he’s widely considered the father of home theater. Long before you could buy a Projector or Micro Led, he’d scrap together old parts from the Local Cinema and build home theaters. He’s also an incredible designer, and established himself as the premier theater designer, designing theaters for high profile Clients all over the world. My brothers and I flew back to his home in Brooklyn to interview him about his life story, coming from Greece, early years in Brooklyn and designing theaters for world leaders and superstars. During a break in filming, Theo asked me ‘Matt why are you doing this?’ Thinking he meant the video interview, I gave an answer, and he said, “That’s great, but why are you doing this? This doesn’t seem like the space for you, you have more to give, you need to do something that lights you up, where you can make an impact” It caught me so much by surprise I was distracted most the rest of the day thinking on what he’d said. In the interview I asked him if he had advice for young dealers, and he said to me ‘be brave, take a chance, you never know what will come.’ I felt like it was an extension of his first message. Not long after I launched full speed into Basketball Coaching and Training. My brothers and I still design theaters, and Smart Homes for clients all over the world. But what lights me up, is working with the young players in the gym, coaching and training basketball. It was such an honor to meet Theo that day, and hear his story. And I’m forever grateful for his encouragement to be brave and take a chance. by @tym.matt
