I drove about a thousand miles one way the other day.

Along the way, I stopped to see my mom. Gave her a big old kiss, told her I love her, held her tight. Let her know her boy’s okay.

Down the road, I saw my grandmother, Mrs. Bonnie Jean Hart. She’s lived a long time, and what a beautiful woman she is. Calm and respectful, I looked at her and said, I love you, Grandma and thank you.

Made it to a little town in Texas. Went to see a man and shook his hand, because there’s too few men left I respect.

Somewhere in there I stumbled on a graveyard and sat down in the grass. One big old granite stone for a rich man. A couple sticks in the ground for a poor one.

The sun was going down, so I sat there a while. A storm was gathering. Thunder out in the distance, lightning striking down, like God was giving me a hello and a good night.

When the sun was gone, I got back in the car, turned around, and drove another thousand miles home.

Whole way back I kept thinking…is the grass greener on the other side, or is it just good either way to be on top of it?

Sometimes, when we try to understand someone, we begin with ourselves.

We ask, “What would I have done?”

But a better question might be:

“Given who they are, what they’ve lived through, and what actually matters to them, why did this make sense?”

Oh, but such an act would take your time.

And time is so expensive.

No one wants to take out their wallet for the art of conversation.

But let your mind expand into wonder and curiosity rather than retreat into the simplest form of “I.”

Understanding someone does not mean agreeing with them. It means stepping outside yourself long enough to see the world through their eyes.

Maybe the world becomes more peaceful when we stop using ourselves as the measuring stick for everyone else.

At the very least, we might stop mistaking our limited truth for the whole truth.

A story was never meant for your eyes alone.

Wholeness has always seemed a smaller miracle.

To leave this life polished, untouched, carefully protected, feels less like survival than absence. A life given fire that never once walked toward it.
There is an older law beneath the visible one.
It asks nothing of happiness.
Nothing of comfort.
Only this:
Were you given fire?
Did you burn?
Were you given strength?
Did you spend it?
Were you given love?
Did you give it away?
Creation does not grieve what is fully given.

Never got the chance to say thank you.
For always saying yes to backyard catch, for showing up, for being there in ways I was too young to understand. For teaching me what mattered before I even knew life would test me on it. You gave me lessons without speeches; you taught by your weight in the room, by effort, by the way a father stands near his son and makes the world feel less heavy. Then you left, and somehow your hardest lesson came after. The silence, was louder than before. The words “I’m proud of you” will never be heard the same. One day the games end, the house gets quiet, and all that’s left are the memories we gave each other. I never got to say thank you. Not the way I should have.

The lesson was time, and you gave it the meaning.
