The USA is a big place, especially in a Lotus. Which makes it all the more incredible that owners from all over the country - east coast to west coast - made the pilgrimage to this year’s inaugural Lotus United Gathering in Salt Lake City. TYPE joined the fun and discovered that the North American Lotus community is not only as passionate, dedicated and welcoming - it’s a uniting force in divisive times.

Even the heavy rain on the morning of 14 May cannot detract from the lasting impression made by the Grote Markt in Ypres. The vast square is surrounded by façades that ooze history from every stone: narrow and tall stepped gables, light-coloured brick walls, Gothic columns and pointed towers.

Without a doubt, we’re in Flanders, the lowlands stretching from the English Channel to beyond Brussels. Bruges, in north-west Belgium, is widely regarded as one of Europe’s finest medieval cities – a dreamlike destination for lovers of history and culture. Nearby Ypres, by contrast, is less well known, despite boasting an equally rich history.

It is here, at this UNESCO World Heritage Site, that the Ypres Lotus Day is taking place for the 16th time. Centuries-old tradition meets the traditions of a close-knit community, celebrating the legacy of a marque that has made history and survived its own trials and tribulations.

Progress. It’s a subjective term, isn’t it? One man’s forward-thinking is another’s backward-step. From politics to art, economics to fashion, progress is rarely an accepted universal truth. When progress breeds success, however? That’s a different story. It’s why Chapman was obsessed with winning.

The evidence is all around us as we arrive at Lotus Cars’ IN PROGRESS exhibition, hosted by Haus of Automotive as part of Milan Design Week.

A wing from the Type 49 (the first aero device ever fitted to an F1 car), a section of the side skirt from the revolutionary ‘ground-effect’ Type 78, and Chris Boardman’s world-record-beating Type 108. Proof, if proof were needed, that Lotus has a stellar record of turning technological progress into competitive success.

Of course, these modern-day artefacts aren’t here for nostalgic reasons. Lotus is trying to navigate its way through some of the most challenging waters the automotive industry has ever seen, whilst facing questions over its very identity. Anchoring itself in legacy is vital to the marque’s storytelling and, ultimately, its soul.

“We now know it’s over-engineered,” says Richard Rackham. The former chief Lotus chassis design engineer is reflecting on the Series 1 Elise with the benefit of three decades, over 10,000 production cars and one particularly revealing test. Lotus measured a bonded aluminium structure that had covered 100,000 miles and found the chassis had lost no stiffness at all.

The Elise chassis – the technical leap that defined modern Lotus – carried more margin than anyone would choose today with the knowledge later gained.

Two hundred and fifty million years old. I try to let that sink in as the ancient, alien rock formations loom large overhead. Formed on the seabed, then catapulted skyward by continental forces, the mountains here are utterly captivating. A prehistoric coral reef, thrust 10,000 feet into the sky.

The Dolomites are a place like no other. Ethereal and intimidating in equal measure, this feels less like modern Italy and more like Tolkien’s Middle-earth, if Frodo’s path through the mountains were paved with some of Europe’s finest driving roads.

We’re here to meet a Lotus owner whose name will already be familiar. Elisa Artioli – the granddaughter of ex-Lotus chairman Romano Artioli and namesake of the Elise, as well as the three-year-old whose face introduced the Type 111 to the world at the 1995 Frankfurt Motor Show.

It’s a well-told story, but it’s the driver, not the name, that we’re interested in getting to know better today, as well as her landmark Lotus – the final customer Elise.

This week we made the pilgrimage to Hethel to take a peek inside the Evija factory, experience the two fastest cars currently rolling off the production line, and chat to a man whose influence on Lotus cars over the past few decades is nothing short of legendary (more on that later).

First up, we got our first taste of the sublime Emira 420 Sport, on road and on track. Read our impressions in the next issue of TYPE, published in November.

In every issue of TYPE, we shine the spotlight on our subscribers and their cars. In issue 002, we featured Larry Webster and his beloved Evora GT.

“Good roads are at least a half day’s drive from my house, which is why I never purchased an Elise. I bought an early version of the road-trip friendly Evora but soon sold it. Then, during lockdown, I had a spin in a GT and loved it. In June 2020, I bought a barely used red Evora GT in Seattle, just so I could drive it home across the country while the roads were empty.

“That was a dodgy trip, but while crossing the Rocky Mountains I had hundreds of miles of epic roads all to myself. The stint included a run through the breathtaking Yellowstone National Park without the usual traffic jams. Amazing. That was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I’ve since added some 20,000 miles during many more fantastic adventures.

“Lotus is all about that hard to verbalize feel from behind the wheel and the joy
of driving. All of the Lotus cars I’ve driven, which is about a dozen, share an uncommon combination I call the three Cs: compliance, crispness, and confidence. The chassis moulds to the road and is enhanced by the exemplary linear action of the controls. A little more pressure on the brake pedal results in the expected deceleration, and the steering has a similar one-to-one ratio, which is what I mean by ‘linear’. All those characteristics combine to impart immense trust in the machine. A Lotus responds in an instinctual way and it makes even everyday pilots feel like driving heroes.”
