What makes two typefaces work together?

Following their story on building TT Norms® Pro Serif, our Supporting Foundries Club member @typetype.foundry continues the conversation with a wider look at font pairing.

A good pair needs clear differences and a real point of connection, such as shared proportions, a similar texture or a common character. The article works through real examples, including matching dense and loose textures, pairing two sans serifs through contrast in width, and pairing two serifs. It also shows what happens when one font’s personality overpowers the other’s.

Old Style, but not old-fashioned: we’ve just published an article about the newly released TT Odellia! 🪶

Meet the new display font TT Polihaus—a chaotic and slightly crazy sans serif with many different sides!

TT Polihaus is an experimental sans serif born in TypeType's Creative Lab. "Geometric shapes" and "multidirectional slants" were the two principles we wanted to merge into one font as part of this experiment. As a result, the slant here isn't just a simple italic—it became the absolute core of the concept.

This is how a sans serif was born that, at first glance, looks ordinary, but then "goes crazy" and breaks apart, transforming into a stencil pattern. The extreme styles, Regular and Crazy, work as a perfect font pair. They’re connected by a variable font slider that you can move in either direction, dialing in just the right level of craziness.

TT Polihaus will effortlessly fit into the visual identity of a dance festival or a rave party. It will look incredible on energy drink packaging or custom Lego sets, in the wayfinding systems of contemporary art exhibitions or creative spaces. The variable font can be a fantastic tool for motion graphics, animation, and title sequences.

Hey everyone! Today we’re talking about the development of a new font that truly knows how to be different 🙃

At first glance, TT Polihaus is an ordinary sans serif—calm and legible. But the moment you move the slider, it starts to go crazy: the letters change their character and transform into an almost abstract stencil pattern. And all of this is packed into a single variable font.

Out of the four available font styles, the designer's favorite turned out to be the SemiRegular style. It doesn't yet reveal the extreme display madness the font can reach, but you can already spot a slight jitter, a hint of a stencil, and the distortion of its "normal" outlines.
