There are always many ways to skin a cat and surely there are a multitude of approaches to building your biceps that work effectively.

But in my experience, I've found there are a couple principles that, if adhered to, can help to make the most out of biceps training.

Concentration curls and preacher curls, and spider curls cut the biceps off from any help from the rest of the body, cornering them and forcing them to fight the weight alone. The biceps is left alone with a bullseye on it, the sole target of the exercise.

โ€ข ๐—ฃ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ต๐˜: I see many bodybuilders do relatively light weight with curls; for the natural lifter, I think this is a mistake.

Weight that is heavy enough to present a challenge and extract a concentrated effort can be a great boon in stimulating growth. I'd recommend that natural lifters should, at least from time to time, pursue the highest level of resistance that still allows for fidelity to the dictates of good form (joints and tendons willing).

โ€ข ๐—ฆ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฒ ๐—ฒ๐˜…๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐˜€--preacher curls (especially 90 degree preacher curls) and spider curls--have the added bonus of mitigating the extent to which cheating on form is even an option, allowing the lifter to make performing the repetition the sole focus and keeping you honest when fatigue-induced temptation creeps in.

โ€ข ๐—ฆ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—บ ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ธ ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด: single-arm biceps work, from my experience, always yields better results all else being equal. That said, it also can extract a greater toll on your tendons and take a greater time to recover from.

The son of a shoemaker who had been a Hungarian Greco-Roman champion, Lou Thesz was on the road to being an amateur wrestling champion before being discovered by Ed "Strangler" Lewis and groomed for a professional career. By 17, he'd left the freestyle mats for the squared circle and by 21, he the world heavyweight champion.

I made this video a while back, posting it on my Youtube page. I've since seen some of the specific clips come up in other videos highlight Lou Thesz, which makes me happy to think I may have helped shine a light on the truth about what a truly technical and brilliant grappler he was.

In my case, it was the footage of Lou Thesz found on Tony Cecchine's Lost of Art of Hooking videos that turned me on to just what an artist he was in the ring. For whatever reason, there are those who undermine Lou Thesz's bona fides as a "shooter," but the proof is in the pudding. He could attack fluidly from every angle, whether you were in front of him, behind him or even on top of him, exploding the notion that wrestlers prior to the 90's had no conception of submissions off their back.

100 lbs, 12 reps on the 90 degree side of the preacher bench.

Crazy to think that Dio was battling one of the most aggressive forms of cancer while he was belting out those notes. The way he growls "look out" always gets me.

RIP.

Before Danaher, before the BJJ leglock revolution, there was Takefumi Hanai.

While BJJ showed the victory of a pragmatism over aesthetics, Takefumi Hanai showed the world that the art of grappling could be as explosive, dynamic and beautiful as any kung fu movie or video game.

Forced to partake in martial arts by his mother, he bounced between arts and dojos, struggling to find his footing until he came across Masakatsu Funaki's Hybrid Technique book, which he'd borrowed from a friend. Fascinated, he emerged from the self-study a man transformed. Gone was the reluctant student, replaced by a man with a clear direction and focus: leglocks.

A Submission Arts Wrestling championship followed, along with a legendary run in Japan's Combat Wrestling circuit, punctuated by a title-winning performance that saw him storm the nationals in a total of 2:22 seconds total mat time.

He didn't merely reflect Funaki's influence in his preference for lower body submissions; perhaps more than anyone, he embodied the approach to grappling that characterized Japanese shoot-style professional wrestling with his acrobatic, high-risk, high-reward style.

A lifelong asthma sufferer, he nonetheless proved just how far willpower and creativity could take a person, even in an arena as harsh and unforgiving as combat sports. He passed away in June, 2019. This video stands as a tribute to the often-overlooked legacy he left behind.

110 lb 90ยฐ preacher curls/spider curls, 11 reps

I actually remember hearing this particular live version of 'Rainbow in the Dark' in the car with my older brother when we were driving back from training with each other. It was shortly after Dio had passed away and the DJ on the radio introduced it as a sort of memorial to him. My brother paused for a second after the song ended and then turned to me and said, "That was awesome."

My older brother working out on the stability ball and some chairs he set up. 55 years old, so natural that he doesn't even go to GNC. I did convince him that protein powder wasn't cheating a while ago, but it took some convincing. by @tyronegunder

Exercise I copied from someone I saw online a while back; I think it hits the obliques pretty good, especially if you focus on pulling with them. by @tyronegunder

My elbows don't straighten out, even fully relaxed. To circumvent this, I've been trying to keep my biceps more neutral and have my palms facing out as much as I can manage. That seems to have allowed me to create an angle with my arms that is much closer to straight than if I'd gone biceps down.

As someone who can often have trouble flushing out all the mental debris of the day out of his head, be it the echo of insults, the burden of guilt for things I said or failed to say or just general worries of the day, I find that fixing my mind upon Jesus can help me find the clarity I need in moments of concentration.

I guess its because when you think of someone who loves you, it can energize and inspire you. And when
I feel beaten down or disappointed, I find that the thought of a God who loves me, who is rooting for me, whatever my failings might've been that day...to whom my life--and any life--is not a zero-sum game but something of immeasurable value is a pretty inspiring thought.

Working out on the iron cross trainer in the garage, again, listening to Iron Maiden's 'Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner'.

I really am not a huge cardio guy, so maybe its ironic that a song about running is my favorite all-time song.

One of the things that I personally think is great about the song is the way it juxtaposes verse about the runner's inner struggles with its soaring chorus, which could be seen to represent the titular runner's response to those struggles. by @tyronegunder
