Deeply honored to have had a retrospective of my solo/duo works presented by the doctoral students at Bowling Green State University last week! A portrait of an artist is definitely a rare and special moment to have. I’m super grateful to have had such amazing performances of my undergrad/grad music. These musicians were all super supportive, caring, and curious. Willing to try new things and help me achieve the vision of ever work! I’ll be share clips from these amazing performers soon!!

Ending my residency with @glasscloudsensemble next weekend with the premiere of a new song collection Saturday, Oct 31st at 2pm. Marisa and Raina approached me to write some new music in May for Glass Clouds’ residency on Governors Island. I wrote two songs with a little violin interlude using poems by E. E. Cummings. The resulting songs became a meditation on being present and mindful of the world, feelings, and events in one’s life. I found that one of the poem’s lines, “futures are obsolete: pasts are unborn” encompassed everything I sought out to capture musically. This line became the title for these songs.

With a busy summer of writing and working my day job at the Juilliard library, I didn’t get to spend nearly as much time at the beautiful house that we had for the residency. Here are a few pictures of my time there!

Many many thanks to Marisa, Raina, @governorsisland , and W. W. Norton (E. E. Cummings’ publisher) for making these songs possible. Will share clips of the performance in the near future! Swipe to end for poems (lyrics)!

Workshopping a new song for @glasscloudsensemble . This clip is the first couple lines of “life is more true than reason,” a poem by E. E. Cummings. The poem speaks of being present and seeing the beautiful in the current moment, rather than worrying about the past and future. I’m planning to take this line from the poem for the title—“futures are obsolete; past are unborn” I think this line captures Cummings thoughts in this poem.

I’ll be working on this piece throughout the next couple months as well as some larger works, so stay tuned to a premiere of this song in the fall!

It’s always so fun writing for friends! by @tysongholsdavis

If you would’ve told me a few years ago that i would have a retrospective of my music at 25 I definitely wouldn’t believe you. Well this coming weekend thats exactly what’s happening at Bowling Green State University! The DMA in contemporary music cohort is putting a portrait concert of my chamber and solo works from the last 6 years! I’m so so grateful for this opportunity and thank you guys so much! The concert will also be live-streamed!

With admiration and gratitude ♥️ by @tysongholsdavis

Clip from my 2019 piece, Delicate Tension, which was premiered in Berlin by Nyo-USA and Antonio Pappano, now music director of the London Symphony! This was my “big break” as a composer. I had turned 18 when I wrote this piece and it toured in Berlin, Edinburgh, and Hamburg.

As most of you guys know, paintings are a big inspiration for my music. This piece was inspired by a Kandinsky painting also titled Delicate Tension. The painting has super dramatic colors and uses abstract geometric shapes. My music responding to it tries to capture that drama.

Wispy chords thinning out, becoming nothingness from the closing section of the first part of “…expansions of light.” I wrote this piece for @jonathan_biss_official in 2023. Jonathan has toured this work across the U.S. and Europe! This work landed my first feature in a major news paper (@bostonglobe) where Jonathan described my music as “…everything in it has meaning — not just every note but every gesture, every marking. Every choice feels significant and feels like it’s made with intentionality. And that strikes me as maybe the difference between good music and bad.

This performance was at Juilliard performed masterfully by my friend @jpjingtingpiano who is also an amazing composer himself!

Here’s a handful of premieres/performances coming up in early 2026 including a new collection of piano works titled “Sky-Ocean” and a longer piece for mixed quartet!

I’m also very honored that the doctoral students at Bowling Green State University have decided to feature my music for a portrait concert! This concert will survey my music over the last 6 years (mostly works for 5 players of less).
