Rivers are lifelines for wildlife 🌊 — including North American river otters, who rely on clean, healthy waterways to swim, hunt, explore, and raise their young.

This #WorldRiversDay, we’re celebrating rivers through the eyes of young Toronto Zoo campers, whose otter drawings remind us that protecting freshwater habitats is also about protecting wonder, imagination, and the wildlife that inspires the next generation of Guardians 🦦 by @tzwconservancy

🦍 This #WorldGorillaDay, celebrate one of our troop's most spirited residents: Charlie!

As the youngest western lowland gorilla in her family group, Charlie is known for her playful personality and determination. She takes part in daily enrichment, training, and physiotherapy that support her health and well-being.

By symbolically adopting Charlie, you'll help provide the thoughtful, individualized care animals rely on every day while supporting the Toronto Zoo's conservation, species recovery, and wildlife protection initiatives.

As proud Guardians of Gorillas, and on this #WorldGorillaDay, we celebrate and raise awareness for the critically endangered Western lowland gorilla, a species facing immense challenges in the wild 🦍

Are you aware that over the past 20–25 years, gorilla populations have declined by more than 60%, with numbers still dropping at an annual rate of 2.7% due to poaching, disease, and habitat loss?

Here at your Toronto Zoo, we’re proud to be part of the AZA Species Survival Plan® (SSP), ensuring healthy, genetically diverse populations while supporting conservation programs to protect gorillas globally.

Our Guardians of Wild 2025–2028 Strategic Plan is pivoting your Toronto Zoo toward becoming a “community-funded conservation science organization,” with a strong emphasis on expanding its conservation science, breeding, biobanking, and collaboration globally.

An important component of this strategy is our continued partnership with Species360, through which we aim to enhance cryopreservation data within the Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS), to better catalogue and share genetic materials. This expansion is intended to support species recovery, genetic rescue, and more coordinated international biobanking efforts. In relation to our work with the Western lowland gorilla, we are one of the sponsors of Species360’s reports on welfare for great apes produced via the Species360 Conservation Science Alliance.

Back in 2022, and alongside our fundraising partners at the Toronto Zoo Wildlife Conservancy @tzwconservancy, we committed $250,000 over 10 years to support Ape Action Africa and the Gorilla SAFE program, joining the more than $5.5 million AZA zoos contribute each year to gorilla conservation.

During your next visit, you can also step behind the scenes of the gorilla habitat and meet with a Wildlife Care member through a Wild Encounter. Learn all about this magnificent species and witness a feeding session up close – all while discovering the daily care and conservation efforts that go into protecting and nurturing the gorilla troop. Your Toronto Zoo is thrilled that the newest southern hairy-nosed wombat baby, affectionately known as #TZPouchPotato, has burrowed straight into the hearts of our community! Now we need your help choosing the perfect name for her!

Starting today, you can cast your vote to help name the joey. Be sure to submit your vote by 11:59pm on Wednesday, September 30.

We are so grateful to our partners at the Australian Consulate in Toronto for their suggestions and support in selecting the name options.

Toronto Zoo guests may be lucky enough to catch tiny peeks of #TZPouchPotato in the coming weeks as she gets a little braver and spends more time exploring outside the pouch. Full pouch emergence is expected later this fall!

You can cast your vote here: https://www.torontozoo.com/wombat

On #WorldRhinoDay, we're highlighting how collaborative conservation and donor support are helping protect rhinos and other endangered species around the world 🦏

Our Wilding Endangered Species Preservation Fund was established in 2022, to further the Toronto Zoo’s support for global conservation initiatives that protect species in the wild through impactful, on-the-ground partnerships - like the International Rhino Foundation (IRF).

Over the past 15 years, poaching driven by the illegal rhino horn trade has put populations at risk. The IRF's vital conservation work is helping to train rangers, strengthen anti-poaching efforts, and provide critical resources to protect rhinos across Africa.

Together, we're helping create a safer future for rhinos. To support these efforts, click on the link in our bio 🦏 by @tzwconservancy

Every September 22, #WorldRhinoDay brings people around the world together for one shared purpose: protecting these remarkable animals and securing a future for rhino species in the wild 🦏

Yesterday, we introduced you to Vishnu and shared the conservation story of the Greater One-Horned Rhino. Today, we turn our attention to Africa, where the story of rhino conservation remains both urgent and complex.

While approximately 16,000 Southern white rhinos remain, the Northern white rhino is Critically Endangered, with just two individuals left. Poaching and other human-driven pressures continue to threaten rhino populations, making collaboration and conservation action more important than ever.

Your Toronto Zoo is proud to participate in the White Rhinoceros Species Survival Plan (SSP), helping maintain a healthy and genetically diverse population in human care while supporting the broader effort to protect this iconic species.

Locally and here at your Zoo, Tom, Sabi, Zohari and Kifaru serve as powerful ambassadors for their wild counterparts, helping our guests and members build a deeper connection with rhinos and understand what is at stake.
You can be part of their conservation story, too 💚

Through the @tzwconservancy Wilding Endangered Species Preservation Fund, we are proud to support the International Rhino Foundation and its work to protect rhinos around the world.

In honour of #SaveTheTigerMonth, we’re sharing artwork created by Zoo Campers over the summer 🐯

For decades, the Toronto Zoo has proudly played an important role in the global conservation of tigers through accredited breeding programs, expert wildlife care, conservation education, and support for international species management.

The Zoo’s participation in the AZA Species Survival Plan (SSP) has helped maintain a healthy, genetically diverse population of Amur tigers in human care, ensuring these incredible animals continue to inspire future generations while supporting the long-term survival of the species.

These drawings remind us of the impact the Toronto Zoo has on connecting people with nature and inspiring the next generation of Guardians. Protecting wildlife starts with awareness, curiosity, and care. We can all help protect these incredible animals and their habitats 🐯 by @tzwconservancy

It’s #InternationalRedPandaDay 🦊🌿

As we celebrate this iconic species today, your Toronto Zoo is proud to stand alongside conservation partners around the world working to protect the Endangered red panda, a remarkable species native to the Eastern Himalayas and southwestern China.

Here at your Zoo, Poppy and Kalden continue to charm members and guests from within their temporary habitat in the African Savanna. Poppy, who celebrated her second birthday this past summer, has formed a special bond with her older male companion Kalden, and together, they are wonderful ambassadors for their wild counterparts 🐾

Are you aware? Their stay in the Africa Savanna (next to the Lions) is temporary for an exciting reason! Over in Eurasia Wilds, work continues on a new, state-of-the-art red panda habitat purposefully designed with animal well-being at its heart and built to support the evolving needs of the red pandas under our care.

This important project is being made possible by the generous support of our fundraising partner – the Toronto Zoo Wildlife Conservancy and its dedicated community of donors. By donating today, you can help bring this new habitat to life and support a future where wildlife and wild spaces thrive.

Join us in celebrating #InternationalRedPandaDay and help build a brighter future for red pandas.

We’re still shellebrating after this past weekend! 🐢💚

The 24th annual Oasis ZooRun returned to the Toronto Zoo with more than 5,000 participants taking part in the 10K, 5K, 400m and 800m CubRun events.

We loved seeing familiar faces, welcoming new ones, connecting with the ZooRun community at the Party Site, and spotting all the creative costumes along the way. Did anyone else see a banana cross the finish line? 🍌

A huge thank you to everyone who fundraised or donated. Together, you helped raise more than $92,000 in support of the Toronto Zoo’s Blanding’s Turtle Headstarting Program and its new home in the Community Conservation Centre.

And that’s not all — this year, the Oasis ZooRun officially reached an incredible milestone: $1 million raised since the event began 🎉🎉

Fundraising remains open until September 30 as we continue cheering on our virtual participants. Help us reach our $110,000 goal by visiting the link in our bio!
