The steel drum, also known as the steel pan, is an instrument that was invented in Trinidad and Tobago in the early 20th century. Its origins can be traced back to the island’s teens, who would use discarded oil barrels to create music and express themselves. The steel pan was developed from this tradition, and it quickly became a symbol of the islands’ rich cultural heritage.

Today, there are thousands of steel drum musicians around the world, and the instrument has become increasingly popular in countries like the United States and Britain.

Steel pan bands now compete in international competitions and perform in concerts and festivals, showcasing the vibrant and unique sounds of this beloved instrument.

Some famous steel drum musicians include Andy Narell and Ray Holman, while the annual Panorama competition draws in crowds of thousands. With over 1,000 registered steel drum entertainers, the future of this vibrant musical tradition is as bright as the shimmering steel of the drums.

The UGigs app is soon to launch. Keep an eye out for its arrival and prepare for an engaging, unforgettable experience.
