Inside the Internship: 2026 U-SoA Summer SeriesMeet Ian Negroni-MartinezWhere are you interning this summer?I’m interning at 10 Design, a global firm based out of Hong Kong. I work locally from their Miami office.What attracted you to this opportunity?Truthfully, what attracted me most about this internship was the team. At 10 Design, there’s a unique sense of collaboration where my input is just as important as everyone else’s — I continuously get the opportunity to present meaningful ideas.What project or task has excited you most so far?My favorite project has been working on four residential towers in Fort Lauderdale. It’s not only taught me a lot about large-scale development and planning, but it’s also been a great way for me to develop my design philosophies, as I got to contribute ideas to the main design and its details.How has U-SoA prepared you for this experience?U-SoA uplifted me into the position I’m in now, being one of the main anchors toward landing a long-term internship. I owe it to the resources and professors that U-SoA set me up with — not only in developing my skills, but also in the relationships I was able to build with my professors given U-SoA’s philosophies on teaching.What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned?The biggest lesson I’ve learned from this internship has been to value my own opinions in the architecture space and to present them with authority and certainty. Early on, I definitely fell into the mentality that I couldn’t contribute ideas due to only being an intern. However, my team has shown me just how valuable everyone’s contribution is to a project and has built confidence in my position within the workspace.What advice would you give other students looking for internships?My strongest advice for students looking for an internship is to build relationships and connections. Without the right connections, it can be really hard to scour the internet looking for opportunities. Networking and putting yourself out there makes the biggest difference. Have confidence in your work and connect with those who share your same ideas.One word to describe your summer experience.Edifying by @u_soa

Inside the Internship: 2026 U-SoA Summer SeriesMeet Jazmin BarbieriWhere are you interning this summer?I’m interning with Coastal Construction in Miami as part of the QA/QC (Quality Assurance & Quality Control) and Warranty team. My work includes reviewing warranty claims, analyzing construction documents, coordinating with subcontractors, and visiting active job sites to see projects in action.What attracted you to this opportunity?I wanted to experience the construction side of architecture and understand how projects come together after the design phase. This internship has given me the opportunity to learn from architects, contractors, consultants, and owners throughout the building process.What project or experience has stood out most?Learning from the team behind the Aston Martin Residences has been a highlight. Through site visits and plan reviews, I’ve seen firsthand the coordination and problem-solving required to deliver a project at that scale, giving me a deeper appreciation for how design translates into construction.How has U-SoA prepared you for this experience?U-SoA gave me a strong foundation in design thinking, problem-solving, and reading architectural drawings. Studio has helped me confidently review plans, understand field conditions, and connect design decisions with the construction process.What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned?I’ve learned that successful projects depend on collaboration. Architects, contractors, consultants, and owners all play a vital role, and communication is essential. This experience has also sparked a new appreciation for construction and the incredible process of seeing a building come to life.What advice would you give other students looking for internships?Be open to opportunities beyond traditional design roles. Ask questions, stay curious, and step outside your comfort zone. Understanding different parts of the industry will make you a stronger architect.One word to describe your summer experience:Eye-opening. by @u_soa

This summer, University of Miami School of Architecture students are participating in the Iberian Traditional Architecture Summer School in Lisbon, an immersive international program dedicated to the study of traditional architecture, urbanism, and place-based design.Through hand drawing, site analysis, lectures, and workshops with leading architects, scholars, and master craftspeople, students are exploring Lisbon's historic neighborhoods while developing design proposals rooted in local building traditions and contemporary urban needs.The Iberian Traditional Architecture Summer School brings together participants from around the world and is organized by the Traditional Building Cultures Foundation with the support of the Municipality of Lisbon, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Fundação Serra Henriques, INTBAU Portugal, and INTBAU Spain.The program is offered in collaboration with the University of Miami School of Architecture, University of Notre Dame, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, University of the Basque Country, Universidade de Lisboa, Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, Universidade Portucalense, the Centro de Investigación de Arquitectura Tradicional (CIAT), the Centro de Informação Urbana de Lisboa (CIUL), and José Baganha & Arquitectos Associados.U-SoA is especially proud to have Professor Frank Martínez serving on the distinguished international faculty, mentoring students alongside leading educators and practitioners from Europe and the United States.We're proud to see our students representing the University of Miami while gaining invaluable international experience, expanding their understanding of traditional architecture, and designing for the future by learning from the past. by @u_soa

Inside the Internship: 2026 U-SoA Summer SeriesMeet Zion HodgeWhere are you interning this summer?I’m interning at Schafer & Company Architects in New York City.What attracted you to this opportunity?As an SCA student pursuing a Certificate in Classical Architecture, I was drawn to Schafer & Co.’s portfolio. I wanted to see how classical architecture is practiced beyond the classroom and gain real-world experience.What project or task has excited you most so far?Working on the schematic design for a new home in the Hamptons has been the highlight. It’s exciting to see client ideas translated into design and to help develop creative solutions throughout the process.How has U-SoA prepared you for this experience?U-SoA prepared me through both its emphasis on design process and exposure to industry software. My Renaissance Architecture course with Professor Victor Deupi also gave me a strong understanding of the classical principles I see applied every day in the office.What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned?The importance of teamwork. Every project depends on collaboration, and seeing the team at Schafer & Co. work together has shown me how essential communication and attention to detail are—from the design itself to the final presentation.What advice would you give students looking for internships?Research firms that align with your interests, but stay open-minded. You may discover a path you hadn’t considered, and every internship offers valuable opportunities to learn and grow.One word to describe your summer experience.Enlightening. Inside the Internship: 2026 U-SoA Summer SeriesMeet Emre GuranWhere are you interning this summer?I am currently working at Socotec US as a Building Envelope Inspector, a consulting firm, primarily offering services in engineering, construction administration, architectural design-assist and value engineering.What attracted you to this opportunity?My long-term goal is to pursue a career in consulting. Therefore I believe it is a great place to work, allowing me to further enhance my existing knowledge of the industry.What project or task has excited you most so far?I am currently tasked with inspecting several new-build high-rises in Brickell and Downtown Miami. It is exciting to be part of large-scale projects that are shaping the next generation of the SoFlo skyline.How has U-SoA prepared you for this experience?U-SoA has prepared me by providing the platform and the outreach opportunities I needed to discover the right career path for myself.What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned?The biggest lesson has been recognizing just how crucial interdisciplinary collaboration is. Working seamlessly alongside different parties, industries, and individuals is absolutely essential for the successful progress and completion of any project.What advice would you give other students looking for internships?Based on my own experience, I highly recommend strengthening technical knowledge and expertise. Inside the Internship: 2026 U-SoA Summer Series 🧡🌴Meet Nicole Knopfholz DaitschmanWhere are you interning this summer?Perkins&Will, New York CityWhat attracted you to this opportunity?What attracted me the most to this opportunity was the way the firm approaches both design and workplace culture. The quality of the projects is clearly a reflection of how much care, enthusiasm, and dedication everyone brings to their work. Since the office I am working in focuses on workplace design, it is especially interesting to experience a workplace that was designed by experts in the field. We spend nearly one-third of our lives working, so being able to contribute to spaces that impact people’s daily lives in a positive way feels very meaningful.What project or task has excited you most so far?It was very interesting to visit the site of Cushman & Wakefield’s new headquarters in New York City, which is currently under construction. Seeing the project in person helped me better understand the scale and complexity of workplace design. The office spans five floors and is dynamic, sustainable, and thoughtfully planned.How has U-SoA prepared you for this experience?U-SoA has been an incredible place for growth and exploration. Through learning from amazing professors and guest speakers, studying abroad in Rome, acting as a Teaching Assistant, and working in the Office of Academic Services, I have had many opportunities for professional development and networking. Most importantly, the school has encouraged me to stay curious and continuously seek inspiration from the people and experiences around me.What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned?The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that every problem can become an opportunity, and that’s the most exciting part of design and life.What advice would you give other students looking for internships?Talk to people and be curious.One word to describe your summer experience. Inside the Internship: 2026 U-SoA Summer SeriesMeet Shreya Gopeesingh1. Where are you interning this summer?I am interning at Americaribe, a Miami-based general contractor with projects throughout the U.S. and Caribbean.2. What attracted you to this opportunity?This opportunity gives me a different perspective on architecture. It exposes me to what it takes to turn drawings from conceptual spaces into a built reality. It has helped me understand the coordination that it takes to make these projects happen.3. What project or task has excited you most so far?I am currently working under Americaribe’s Design Manager, Maria Garcia, on a Hyatt Centric in the Cayman Islands. I am also working with Maria Luisa, who I am pictured with, on schools in St. Thomas and St. Croix meant to serve children from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 8.4. How has U-SoA prepared you for this experience?U-SoA has prepared me by allowing me to think critically about design and adapt to different environments. It has also made me familiar with construction drawings, which I use on a daily basis. Most importantly, studio has taught me the value of collaboration and communication with others.5. What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned?My biggest lesson is how much thought goes into making a building. There is not one inch that has not been thought of, from the finishes of wood to the number of pillows on a chair. Every single detail has been thought about and reviewed, from the distances between pinch points to the landscape plan for planters. It has shown me how much care goes into each project and how many people are involved in construction, including architects, interior designers, consultants, clients, engineers, and estimators. Moreover, it has shown me how much they rely on each other.6. What advice would you give other students looking for internships?Don’t be discouraged by rejection or slow responses. Keep persisting.7. One word to describe your summer experience.Transformational. by @u_soa
