Big cheers for Walker Grubb! Between rigorous engineering coursework, student orgs, and performing with the Million Dollar Band, Walker does an incredible job representing CCEE. Dr. Robert Bertini, alongside department staff members Rhiannon Davidson and Mariah Parker (and Lusi Scott, who wasn't pictured), caught up with him earlier this week during the North End Zone assembly.

This week's CCEE Bio will highlight Dr. Sriram Aaleti, an Associate Professor and the Associate Department Head for Graduate Studies within our department. He was recently awarded the CCEE 2025 Faculty Excellence in Graduate Education Award.

His research focuses on assessing reinforced concrete and wood structures exposed to natural and human-made hazards while developing durable, next-generation systems to address the deterioration of U.S. infrastructure. Dr. Aaleti specializes in designing performance-based systems that can withstand earthquakes, vehicle loads, or both, utilizing advanced materials such as Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) and cross-laminated timber (CLT). His work integrates small and large scale testing alongside numerical and analytical simulations. He has pioneered the PreWEC system, a precast wall design aimed at reducing building damage during seismic events. His findings on post-tensioned precast systems have been incorporated into U.S. building codes (ACI 318-19; ACI ITG 5.2). Additionally, Dr. Aaleti has developed design guidelines for a new UHPC precast waffle deck panel system, expanding its use through accelerated bridge construction (ABC) methods in the U.S. He has led and co-led various federally and state-sponsored research projects, contributing to advancements in bridge construction and improving the durability and seismic resilience of critical infrastructure.

We're glad to have you with us, Dr Aaleti! #rolltide taken in The University of Alabama by @ua_ccee

This week's CCEE Bio will highlight Dr. Jialai Wang, a Professor within our department. Dr. Wang leads a building materials research lab in which he and his team conduct experimental research to improve their understanding of both novel and traditional materials for civil infrastructure. He was also recently awarded the CCEE Faculty Preeminence in Research Excellence and Innovation Award!

Dr. Wang's main research efforts focus on material innovations to enhance the resilience and sustainability of civil infrastructure systems. His current research topics include the synthesis and characterization of innovative sustainable materials, including low and non-clinker construction materials, fiber-reinforced polymer composites, in-situ nanoparticle production for better performance of structural materials, and adaptive building envelope for multi-hazard mitigation and energy efficiency. taken in The University of Alabama by @ua_ccee

This week's CCEE Bio will highlight Dr. Hamed Moftakhari, an Associate Professor within our department. Dr. Moftakhari leads the Coastal Hydrology Lab, in which three of his research students just walked the stage and are heading into postdoctoral positions at North Carolina State University, Lehigh University, and Carnegie Mellon University!

His research interests are in the area of coastal hydrology, and involves multi-hazard risk analysis, management and modeling, and integrated coastal/estuarine hydrodynamic modeling. He explores how the interaction between inland hydrologic processes and coastal ocean processes would affect resources such as food, energy and water in the low-lying coastal regions, and how the response of affected communities would mitigate/intensify the impacts, His research is mainly focused on two categories of processes: extreme events with multiple underlying drivers and minor repetitive events (i.e. nuisance flooding) which their chronic impacts would pose considerable cumulative costs over time. His research sheds light on the projected risk associated with compounding effects of natural hazards due to human activities and sea level rise. taken in The University of Alabama by @ua_ccee
