Fourteen fourth-year PharmD students, two psychiatry residents and one addiction medicine fellow from the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry spent part of their summer at the Hazelden Betty Ford Summer Institute for Medical Education.

During this immersive, patient-centred program, learners step outside their clinical roles and participate alongside people in recovery through group therapy, shared meals and educational sessions. The experience offers a powerful opportunity to listen, reflect and deepen their understanding of substance use disorder, stigma and trauma-informed care.

We couldn’t be prouder to see these future health professionals developing the empathy and understanding needed to provide more compassionate, person-centred care!

“Having attended this program myself, I know how profoundly it can shape a learner’s understanding of addiction. Few experiences in health professional training place such a sustained focus on the human side of care. The impact it creates will ripple outward for years, shaping how participants care for patients and how they influence the colleagues around them." — Candace Necyk, clinical professor A group of people standing together and smiling in front of a wooden wall. University of Alberta researchers Dr. Frank Wuest and Dr. Afsaneh Lavasanifar have developed a new imaging test that helps doctors see lung cancer more clearly and track how well treatments are working over time.

The test pairs an antibody already used in cancer treatment with a radioactive tracer, allowing tumours to “light up” during a PET scan. This gives clinicians valuable insight into where cancer is, how it’s behaving, and how it’s responding — all without invasive procedures.

It’s an important step forward for a disease that’s often detected too late. With clearer imaging and earlier insight, doctors can make more informed treatment decisions and better support patients throughout their care. by @ualberta_pharmacy

Happy World Pharmacists Day!

This World Pharmacists Day we are, "Empowering pharmacists for healthier futures," by showcasing how pharmacists and researchers extend care far beyond dispensing.

As health needs change over time, managing multiple prescriptions becomes essential to preventing adverse effects and improving quality of life. Dr. Cheryl Sadowski’s research on deprescribing shows how pharmacists take the time to evaluate a patient's entire health picture, streamline treatment plans and safely reduce redundant medications.

“Patients just kind of accept that being on a lot of pills is part of aging, but it doesn’t have to be,” she says.

Precision dosing of anti-rejection drug could be the answer for kidney transplant patients

Too low and the body rejects the organ. Too high and the drug becomes toxic. For kidney transplant recipients, the anti-rejection drug mycophenolic acid is a lifesaver, but finding the right dosage for every patient has always been unpredictable.

A new study led by Dr. Tony Kiang reveals how specific bodily toxins cause the drug to behave unpredictably, paving the way for personalized dosing that could dramatically reduce organ rejection and side effects.
