The studio light course is off to an exciting start - with the limitation of using a piece of plain white paper on a white background, everyone moved light around in surprising ways! ⚡️✨⚡️

A heartfelt congratulations to School of Art alumnus (MFA Photography ’23), Harlan Bozeman, on being named a 2026 recipient of the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship! Our students go on to do extraordinary work, and this recognition is evidence of the impact our alumni are making with their art. ✨

Harlan serves as a Professor of Practice at Tulane University (@tulaneu). Originally from Central Arkansas, his research-driven practice confronts the erasure of Black legacies, examining how these histories shape identity and personhood. Harlan's earlier work focuses on the Gullah Sea Island communities, particularly Wadmalaw Island, where his family is from, exploring narratives that preserve and sustain their cultural significance.

His current projects blend photography, collage, and archival research to interrogate historical omissions and distortions, with a specific focus on the region of Elaine, Arkansas.

He earned an MFA in Studio Art from the University of Arkansas and a BA in Journalism from DePaul University in Chicago. He is a 2023 alumni of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and a 2024 CatchLight Global Fellow. His work has been featured in The New York Times, The Atlantic, and The British Journal of Photography. @harlanbozeman @guggfellows @uarkfulbright

We are so proud of you, Harlan! 📷 ❣️

UARK Photo is excited to host visiting artist, Garrett Hansen for an artist lecture on Thursday, March 5 at 9:30am in the Studio & Design Center, room 205. All are welcome to join!

Garrett graduated from Grinnell College, where he studied economics and political science. He completed his MFA in photography at Indiana University and has taught at several universities in the United States and in Asia; he is now an Assistant Professor of Photography at the University of Kentucky. Garrett has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in North America, Europe, Australia, South America and Asia.

Hansen’s work examines the implications of the vast presence of guns in the United States. The viewer is presented with images that speak to the sublime – they are both attractive and terrifying at the same time. The images serve as a fitting metaphor of the opinions of guns in America, a country where the debate between rights and controls persists. by @uarkphotography

Calista Lyon’s Uncertain Behavior of Clouds is a lecture performance that investigates the mysterious role of clouds and their influence in shaping our climate’s future. As one of the greatest unknowns in climate science, clouds have long confounded predictions about the severity of global warming, making them a powerful symbol of uncertainty. Drawing on scientific research that models a future in which low-level clouds may disappear, this work explores the politics of atmospheric extinction and the implications of this loss. Using research, performance, image projection, and sound, the work invites audiences to reflect on the political, environmental, and ethical dimensions of climate uncertainty—prompting us to consider what drifts above us and our collective responsibility.

Collaborators: Tui Lyon, Drew Nikonowicz, Nikola Radan

SUN DEC 14: 1-4 PM*
*lecture performance begins at 2 PM

✨Special topics course offered this Spring✨

ARTS 4950V/ARTS 6950V Special Topics
The Lecture Performance: Playing with Knowledge
2:00 - 4:45 p.m. Tues & Thurs, Spring, 2026

This combined undergraduate and graduate studio course centers on the lecture performance—a hybrid art form that blends the academic format of a lecture with elements of performance art to explore how knowledge is created, communicated, and received.

Through this lens, we will consider critical questions such as:
How can the lecture performance format be used to facilitate curiosity, investigation, and learning about topics you care about?
What might we gain by creatively reimagining the creation and sharing of knowledge?
In what ways might a lecture performance question or dismantle traditional hierarchies of knowledge?
Who holds the authority to speak, and how can this art form challenge or reinforce notions of expertise?
How might you subvert or playfully engage with the traditional tools of a lecture to create new meaning?
In this course, students will build an understanding of the wide-ranging forms of the lecture performance by watching and analyzing historical and contemporary works, as well as examples from media installations and theater.

As a studio-based course, learning will involve lectures, demonstrations, readings, writing, discussion, critiques, and visiting artist talks. The primary work is the creation of your own original lecture performance. This comprehensive project includes writing a script, developing supporting visuals through your own lens-based practice or via found images, formalizing the structure of the work, and conducting rehearsals. The course culminates in two public performance events, which you will collectively organize to share your final work. by @uarkphotography
