Eric Jurkiewicz learned the power of saying "yes" 🎓

From transfer student to first-gen graduate to MBA candidate, Eric's journey at UBalt shows what happens when you embrace every opportunity.

He said yes to: ✨ Student panels ✨ Leadership organizations
✨ Peer tutoring ✨ Graduate school

Now? He's considering becoming a college professor—a path he never imagined when he started.

"I didn't feel like a completely new student when I walked through these doors for the first time. I think it was better than what I expected, just because I feel like people have always believed in me here."

Catastrophizing is not an AI policy.

In a new opinion piece, UBalt Professor of Accounting Mikhail Pevzner argues that the national conversation around AI has fixated on two extremes: unregulated acceleration or apocalyptic warnings. Neither approach addresses the real challenge.

Instead of leaving AI development entirely to market forces that prioritize short-term returns, Pevzner proposes directing significant AI resources toward society's biggest challenges—cancer research, clean energy, neurological mapping, and space exploration.

His vision? An organizational model similar to the Manhattan Project or the Genesis Mission, uniting government, universities, and private industry around urgent societal problems with massive long-term value.

Higher education has a critical role: identifying high-impact problems, evaluating solutions, and helping de-catastrophize the debate. Business schools especially can contribute expertise on funding structures, incentive design, and measuring success.

“I feel like I can do things that I never had a desire to do, but now I have a desire to do them."

When her job became unrecognizable, Tamara knew she needed to change course.
She came to UBalt looking for a career rebirth. She also found an ever-growing list of opportunities, renewed talents and constant reminders that she made the right choice.

“I never wanted to be an entrepreneur, but now I have a genuine interest in having a business. I never really wanted to do consulting, but now I have an interest in consulting businesses on how to deploy AI ethically, and those are passions and desires and skills that I've acquired since I've been here in the last year.”

Today, we recognize and remember the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, 25 years later.
Our community lost three alumni in the attacks that day — Joseph V. Maggitti, B.S. ‘75; Seamus Oneal, M.S. ‘97; and Karen L. Seymour, B.S. ‘81.
Many members of our community went into service, with the military or as public servants, because of the events of that day and we are all forever changed by it.
In our remembrance, we look to the promise of the future we’re building together.
“The event itself shocked the conscience of our nation and the world, but The University of Baltimore has been part of a long, sometimes painful recovery,” President Kurt L. Schmoke said in a message to the UBalt community. “I urge you to take a moment on Sept. 11 and reflect on these things. As a free society, our best days are still ahead.” A view of the memorial plaque on the University of Baltimore campus made for the alumni lost in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. by @ubaltbusiness
