Art historian and cultural heritage expert Tatia Gvineria (@tatia_gvineria) explores historic Garetubani (outer neighbourhood) of Tbilisi, which once encompassed parts of present-day Rustaveli Avenue and its surrounding area. As she notes, Gareubani is also marked on Vakhushti Batonishvili’s Map of Tbilisi (1735), in the area surrounding the Kala district.

Tatia describes how the infrastructure of Garetubani was developed along its main highway, which corresponds to today’s Rustaveli Avenue. She also reflects on the recent reconstruction works carried out in the above-mentioned area, during which 10th-century archaeological artefacts were uncovered.

Founded by Tatuli Japoshvili (@moreinvisible) and Giga Tsikarishvili (@giga_tsikarishvili), @withnessing is a platform for transdisciplinary artistic research that nurtures cultural, social, and environmental ecologies to reinvent new ways of co-existing. With an open collaborative framework, it aims to incorporate perspectives concerned with expanding the concepts of subjectivity, aesthetics, and ethics at the intersections between art, architecture, and design.

Since the begining of the research project “Ezologia — Porous Body of Tbilisi”, the platform has been one of its collaborators. The exhibition, which is the first public presentation of the project, features the workshop outcomes, archival and literary research by wit[h]nessing.

If you haven’t seen the exhibition yet, visit the Tbilisi History Museum (Sioni Street 8) through October 20, 2026.

Tbilisian Courtyard is not merely an urban form. It is a social setting where everyday interactions, shared ways of living, and networks of collective memory have developed and been passed down across generations.

Sociologist Mariam Jibuti’s (@mjibuti) article, “Social Elements of Tbilisian Courtyard,” explores precisely this topic. By examining physical elements such as balconies, shared water taps, seating and gathering areas, and entrance gates, Jibuti approaches the Tbilisian Courtyard not only as architectural heritage, but as a space that reflects its social culture.

The research is part of the ongoing exhibition “Ezologia — Porous Body of Tbilisi,” which is hosted by @tbilisihistorymuseum_karvasla.

In this post, we explore works of Georgian cinema that depict the social and spatial significance of the Tbilisian Courtyard. The selection of films was curated by architect Natalia Vasadze (@ticcofeo), who is also the author of the text presented in the slides.

The selection includes:

“Last Day, First Day” (1959)
Director: Siko Dolidze

“April” (1962)
Director: Otar Iosseliani

“Once Upon a Time There Was a Singing Blackbird” (1970)
Director: Otar Iosseliani

“Autumn Sun” (1973)
Director: Temur Palavandishvili

“In these movies we see the Tbilisian Courtyard as an urban image – although partly constructed and idealized during the Soviet era – and one that reflects both the Georgian tradition of collective living and the role of architectural space in shaping the country’s social identity.” — Natalia Vasadze

A video collage featuring excerpts from these films, curated by Natalia Vasadze, together with an accompanying text authored by her, is presented in the exhibition “Ezologia — Porous Body of Tbilisi,” currently on view at the Tbilisi History Museum (@tbilisihistorymuseum_karvasla).

The series of posts featuring the urban elements of Kala concludes with exploring the district’s connections.

These urban connections, also called “invisible shortcuts,” are hidden pedestrian pathways that create links between streets, courtyards, dead ends, and various buildings. Typically, these pathways are absent from the official urban maps of Tbilisi.

The visual materials included in this post were created during the preparation of the guidebook “Kala.” Each image is accompanied by addresses of the streets that are connected by the “invisible shortcuts.”
