Love, Intersectionality, and Integrating Black History into Everyday Life

Love is all around us, and lately it has invited deeper reflections through Olivia Dean’s music. Inspired by Bell Hooks 1999 book All About Love, which reminds us that love is not just a feeling but an intentional practice, encourages us to think more critically about how we show up for one another.

When we examine love through the lens of oppressive power dynamics, race, gender, class, and power, we begin to understand intersectionality and its importance in conversations about justice.

Black women continue to be labelled as “angry,” a stereotype that dismisses and ignores their resilience, strength, and humanity.

As we advocate for feminism, we must actively uplift and recognize their presence, contributions, and lived experiences. Critical thinking, questioning, and analyzing are essential for social justice to grow and for our society to evolve.

Advocacy does not end in February. It continues. It deepens. It evolves. ❤️ by @ubcwec

October 18th is Persons Day! Today marks a milestone in Canadian history—a day to recognize and reflect on the journey women have walked and continue to navigate today.

On this day in 1929, the Famous Five won a historic legal battle that officially recognized Canadian women as "persons" under the law, opening the doors for women to sit in the Senate and hold public office.

Among other things, this day highlights the lasting impact of collective action, courage, and perseverance. It reminds us of the trailblazers who paved the way and serves as a powerful call to keep dismantling barriers, uplifting diverse voices, and advocating for gender equality. Today we recognize their efforts and reflect on our own as we continue to stand up and fight for inclusion, equity, and justice for everyone! 💪💗 #personsday #equality #womensrights by @ubcwec

Now’s your chance to get involved with the UBC student community and make an impact by empowering women, building community, and creating spaces where people can connect, feel represented, and belong.

Whether you love planning events, creating content, fundraising for causes you care about, starting conversations, or bringing people together, there’s a place for you on our team. We’re looking for passionate individuals who want to help shape, support, and include the communities they’re a part of.

We encourage anyone who shares our mission of uplifting women and highlighting the voices and experiences of people of colour and queer communities to apply. We especially welcome applicants who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+ and/or hold diverse gender identities, as we hope to continue building a team with a wide range of perspectives and experiences.

Anyone can help shape the Women Empowerment Club, and we’d love to hear what you can bring to our team! by @ubcwec

Periods don’t come with an off-switch

Period poverty is about much more than access to pads or tampons. It also includes limited access to healthcare, education, safe facilities, and the resources needed to properly understand and maintain menstrual health.

On Thursday, April 2nd and 7th, WEC will be at the Nest collecting donations for the period poverty drive. There will also be an opportunity to try a period simulator for a donation starting at $2.

This is an opportunity to support menstrual equity, raise awareness, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by period poverty. 🤍

Join us at the Nest on April 2nd & 7th (10AM–4PM) for our period poverty donation drive in support of Nisa Foundation, an organization that creates safe homes for survivors of domestic violence across Canada.
We are collecting:
❣️ Unopened period products
❣️ Unused personal hygiene items (shampoo, deodorant, soap)
❣️ Monetary donations
This campaign will also feature a Period Pain Simulator, for those interested in experiencing the reality of menstrual pain and learn why access to period products matters.
📢Try the simulator with a small donation to the drive!
Let’s come together to support women by making a donation, and with it, a real impact 💞 by @ubcwec

How Does AI Envision a Woman?

AI has become a major topic of discussion in recent years. While it is often seen as a tool for progress, it does not always offer help. Instead, it can reproduce and reinforce misogynistic and sexist ideas, placing women into narrow molds of beauty, occupation, and identity.

However, AI does not create these ideas on its own, it learns them from us. It reflects the beliefs, biases, and expectations that already exist in society about what women should look like and how they should behave.

As a result, AI can reinforce harmful stereotypes and even exploit women’s bodies and images. At the same time, broader systems and media continue to confine women within rigid standards, often overlooking the beauty of individuality and diverse identities. by @ubcwec

How are women changing the game? 💗⛷️🏒⛸️

As the Milano 2026 Olympic Games recently ended, we want to highlight some women’s amazing achievements! From athletes such as Alysa Liu to Tabbulah Proulx and many more, they all preserved and did exceptional at the Games. From travelling distances, overcoming challenges and challenging gender or racial stereotypes, they all have made an impact.

These women have taught us that we are capable of achieving our dreams through hard work and dedication 🫶🏽 #olympics #womeninspiringwomen #ubc by @ubcwec

Next Thursday evening is our annual general meeting. We will be voting on our exec team for next year, as well as reviewing our terms and bylaws. The meeting will be held over zoom and is open to all members! by @ubcwec
