First-year students in Interventions II practicing lumbar traction techniques, blood flow restriction therapy (BFR), and LASER therapy across several lab sessions. Pairs of students take turns as clinician and patient, setting up equipment, monitoring responses, and adjusting parameters. Between running traction belts, inflating BFR cuffs for strengthening exercises, and using protective eyewear for LASER applications, students are building confidence with both the technical skills and the clinical reasoning that will carry into their future patient care. OPTA Southwest District PT Day of Service

This past weekend, our students volunteered at Western Wildlife Corridor’s Habitat Restoration site, spending the day together in service to our local community as part of National Physical Therapy Month in October. Thank you to everyone who took time out of their weekend to participate and represent our program. Two students standing in a clearing, holding loppers and smiling after cutting brush. by @uc_dpt

The UC DPT program was well represented at the annual Brain Injury Alliance of Northern Kentucky Conference! Dr. Amu De Silva presented “What’s Left in Right Brain Injury,” bringing together neuroscience, rehabilitation, and clinical practice, while also sharing the stage with third-year students, Teresa Schnell and Isaac Turner, who had the opportunity to contribute to the presentation and gain conference experience. 3 individuals stand on a stage with a large screen next to them that projects: “What is Left in Right Brain Injury?” by @uc_dpt

This past weekend, Dr. Melinda Ferguson and Dr. Audrey Johnson presented at the annual KPTA Conference. They presented on the new Acute Care Outcome Measure set which provides evidence-based recommendations for selecting and using standardized outcome measures to assess physical function in adults receiving physical therapy services in the hospital setting. There are several goals of the guideline which includes: promoting consistency in outcome measurement across acute care practice, supporting clinical decision-making and goal setting, enhancing communication among clinicians, patients, and health care teams, and improving the quality and comparability of outcomes data across settings and populations. We are so grateful to have dedicated clinicians representing our program at this level and demonstrating the value of our profession in the hospital environment! Last Friday, we had the honor of celebrating our first-year DPT students at their Investiture Ceremony!

This special milestone marks the beginning of their journey into the physical therapy profession, and we are so proud to welcome them into this next chapter. Their hard work, dedication, and commitment have already brought them so far, and this moment was a celebration of all they have accomplished.

Congratulations to our first-year DPT students—we can’t wait to see all that you achieve! Four students pose in front of a window display decorated with red, black, and white Bearcats decorations, smiling at the camera. by @uc_dpt

This past weekend, third year student Daniel Arimi presented at the KPTA Conference with guidance from Dr. Chalee Engelhard, Dr. Amber Boyd, and Dr. Katie Torbeck through his special topics course. Read from him below!

“I had a great experience at the Kentucky APTA Annual Conference presenting on Competency Based Education. This research was done with my classmate Olivia Matthews in our Special Topics class with the guidance of Amber Boyd, Chalee Engelhard, and Katie Torbeck. I found this to be a learning opportunity by learning more about CBE and what implications it could have on physical therapy programs nationally as well as being able to educate others who weren’t aware of this style of learning. It was fun to present and have conversations with people about this topic hearing their thoughts, and I am grateful that I was able to represent the University of Cincinnati DPT program!” A man and a women dressed professionally stand in front of a poster presentation, appearing cheerful and professional. by @uc_dpt

Our first-year physical therapy students are getting some hands-on practice with thermotherapy, compression, and cryotherapy in the lab. From paraffin and wraps to cold-compression treatment, they’re learning the basics and building foundational skills along the way. Over Labor Day weekend, 1st year DPT students took every opportunity to turn ordinary moments into PT "skills snacks". We hope we made Dr. Becky Rebitski proud by putting our goniometry skills to work outside of the classroom.
