Earlier this week, we were thrilled to welcome 260+ high school students from 58 schools across Calgary and the surrounding area for @cdnmedhallfame’s annual Discovery Days in Health Sciences!   Throughout their day at #UCalgaryMed, students participated in interactive workshops, connected with healthcare professionals, physicians and researchers, and explored many of the career paths available in medicine and the health sciences.    We hope the experience sparked curiosity and inspired the next generation of health leaders! 🩺 by @ucalgarymed
Congratulations to Dr. Aaron Phillips, PhD, who was recently presented with the Peter Gilgan Canada Gairdner Momentum Award!   This national recognition places Dr. Phillips among a distinguished group of researchers whose work is transforming health and medicine, and marks only the second time a @UCalgary scholar has received a Gairdner Award.   In just 15 years, Dr. Phillips has emerged as a leader in spinal cord injury (SCI) research for advancing monitoring and therapeutic innovations that are reshaping care for people living with SCI.   Bravo to Dr. Phillips on this remarkable achievement and well-deserved honour!   🔗 Visit the link in bio to read more. 📸: Tim Fraser by @ucalgarymed
Could “biological Velcro” help explain dangerous blood clots in people with type 2 diabetes? Paula Brandt, BSc’22, is a @ucalgarymed PhD student investigating how islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP), a protein involved in regulating blood sugar, can become sticky when it misfolds. In her Three Minute Thesis (3MT) talk, Paula used the familiar comparison to Velcro to explain how this protein could contribute to unusually tough blood clots, earning first place at @UCalgary’s 3MT competition and the Western Regional competition. Now, Paula is preparing to represent UCalgary at the 2026 National 3MT Showcase on Nov. 4 in Regina. Click the link in our bio to read the full UToday article. by @ucalgarymed

Want to feel inspired? Join Dr. Emma Schalm, MD, a second year resident anesthetist, on a day in her busy life.   Today is World Anesthesiology Day, a chance to reflect and celebrate the diverse roles of anesthesiologists in and outside the operating room. From first contact through recovery and long-term follow-up, patients interact with anesthesiologists at multiple stages of their care journey, extending across diverse healthcare settings.   The CSM’s Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine department includes 13 sections and dozens of physicians working at the five hospitals in the city and several rural locations in Alberta.   Thank you to all of them! Today we celebrate your efforts and expertise in teaching, learning and keeping the community safe through this important medical specialty.   World Anesthesiology Day takes place Oct. 16 each year to commemorate the first successful public demonstration of ether anesthesia by William T. G. Morton at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston in 1846. by @ucalgarymed
Congratulations to Dr. Amy Metcalfe on earning the 2026 Killam Memorial Chair. “I am deeply honoured to receive this recognition and support from the Killam Foundation and the University of Calgary,” says Metcalfe. “Their support will help accelerate progress our team is making to better understand how events during pregnancy can predict later life health and help identify opportunities for early interventions to improve outcomes for pregnant people and their children.” by @ucalgarymed
Ahead of World Anesthesiology Day, we’re celebrating the many ways anesthesiologists contribute to patient care, education and research. From first contact through recovery and long-term follow-up, patients interact with anesthesiologists at multiple stages of their care journey, extending across diverse healthcare settings.   Beyond the hospital setting, #UCalgaryMed’s faculty anesthesiologist’s play a key role in undergrad and graduate medical education, leading simulation-based training, and mentoring residents and fellows from a range of medical specialties.   The CSM also has a rich history of advancing research in anesthesia, perioperative care and pain medicine, presenting research nationally and internationally. Over the past decade, many undergraduate and master’s students in the department have been generously supported by The Tim and Linda Tang Anesthesia Research Fund.   Be sure to check back tomorrow (Oct. 16) as we mark World Anesthesia Day, by featuring a day in the life video with second year anesthesiology resident Dr. Emma Schalm, MD.   📸 1-5: Staff anesthesiologists in the Advanced Technical Skills Simulations Laboratory on Foothills campus, teaching at the difficult airway course, where residents and fellows in several different specialties practice hands-on airway management techniques, working in the preadmission clinic, completing preoperative consults which can be in person virtual consults done over the phone, preparing/drawing up medications in the operating room.   📸 6-8: Current and former UCalgary learners presenting research related to neuroscience, pain management and rehabilitation at symposiums and conferences in Canada. by @ucalgarymed
