my River 💍 by @ucancallmechon

i recently turned thirty-one so i’m now a fully-fledged adult operating in the real world, right? 🤪

i wrote this piece back in May, when i was still thirty, but the premise is still the same. we idolise yet demonise the next decade. we’ll be wiser and life will suddenly make sense, but you’ll look withered so start on the botox.

i always thought i’d have it all figured out by thirty. but, unfortunately, no extra hindsight was gifted to me when the clock struck midnight.

as i have aged, however, i have started to prioritise different things and maybe have gained a little more perspective. i know a lot of people, mostly women, freak out about turning thirty and rightly so - we are told from all directions how horrendous it is for us to be older.

but please ignore it, find some solace in what i’ve written, and be so grateful that you’re still here telling your tale.

I think I’ve finally worked out what I want to be when I grow up. 🧠

I want to work in editorial.

More specifically, I want to spend my days reading, researching, interviewing, writing, editing, asking too many questions and getting disproportionately excited about a really good story.

—

After almost six years in recruitment + a one year career break , I’m making a rather overdue move towards the world I’ve been circling for a while: publishing, journalism and editorial.

I have a degree in Broadcast Journalism, a background in communications, wellness, content and recruitment, and I’m now working as a freelance writer alongside writing my own publication, Wildly Unqualified x.

I’m particularly interested in features, culture, entertainment, women’s health, human-interest stories and digital editorial, and I’m looking for opportunities to make my next move into the industry.

Especially Editorial Assistant roles in magazines or book publishing. 📚

—

My career hasn’t followed the most conventional route into publishing, but I’ve realised that I actually rather like that.

So, hello 👋 I’m Chon.

I’m putting this out into the universe in the hope that the right person, publication or opportunity finds its way back to me. The job market is so bad that I have nothing to lose by posting this on here.

—

If you’re working in publishing, journalism, magazines or editorial, I’d bloody love to hear from you.

And if you’ve landed here because you already read Wildly Unqualified x, thank you. It feels rather lovely that this is where I’m putting down another little marker in the story x

and yes, i have noticed the typo 😭😭 by @ucancallmechon

the first article which inspired my monthly series, “What The Health is Happening”.

having had the amazing experience of working (for a brief time) as a menstrual cycle coach, i wanted to continue to flex my coaching muscles and utilise my qualifications. 🩸

periods, rightly, get a bad rap because we’ve been conditioned that pain is inevitable and we should suffer in silence because no one needs to know that you’re bleeding out whilst giving that very important presentation to senior stakeholders. 🤪

by understanding what is causing your pain, you can start to figure out how to treat it. 🩺

the relationship i once found so difficult to navigate is now my most precious. no one teaches you how to be a mum, and there’s no guidebook on how to be a young woman navigating this planet for the first time 🕰️

this piece was incredibly vulnerable but necessary for me to explore. the mother / daughter dynamic can be beautiful, it can be heartbreaking & it’s all the other emotions in between.

ageing is a wonderful thing & it’s taught me to see my own mother in a different, more sympathetic life.

i hope this resonates with someone out there - and id love to know about your own experiences ❤️‍🩹

my first ever article on substack - from april this year 🥺🥺

the past year has been a lot of learnings for me. when i quit my corporate job, i fully threw myself into building a coaching business that ultimately didn’t work.

i had to battle with the very uncomfortable reality that i may have to re-enter the 9-5 (which, reader, is incredibly difficult but that’s a story for another time).

when i was at school, uni and a very green graduate, i dreamed of high rise buildings, killer pant suits and a corporate salary that would free me from the low socioeconomic life i was desperate to escape from.

but that never really happened. i chased pay rises and promotions and all i have to show it is a mental breakdown and burnout.

the world we were promised, and that so many of us went into extreme debt for, no longer exists.

every older generation loves to say that the generations below them don’t want to work, but can we really blame them? 🤷🏼‍♀️

almost a year ago, i turned my life upside down: i quit my safe corporate job that had been earning me a good amount of money for 6 years, tried to launch my own health coaching business and failed within 6 months.

in an effort to not go completely insane, i rediscovered writing and started a substack. ✍️

turns out, some people actually enjoy what i write! there is something incredibly cathartic about sharing your deepest thoughts, most embarrassing stories and most yearned for desires to a bunch of strangers on the internet. 🌞✨

i thought id start an IG page to publish my essays & further throw myself into the delusion that i will, one day, be a *successful* writer.

i can’t promise you groundbreaking, philosophical rumination’s but i can promise a cheap laugh & a sense of knowing you’re not alone 🤝 by @ucancallmechon
