Another successful Afro Floor Block Party! ❤️🖤💛💚

•••
On May 1st, Afro Floor’s 2025–2026 Melanated Masterpiece hosted our annual Afro Floor Block Party, bringing together an evening filled with food, dancing, dorm tours, community, and celebration.

Over the past three months, Afro Floor members dedicated countless hours to planning every detail of this event. From logistics and programming to outreach and execution, multiple teams worked together to create an experience that reflected the spirit and excellence of our community.

A special thank you to everyone who showed up and showed our from past Afro Floor residents, Residential Life staff, the village and the wider Black community at Cal. Your presence made this event unforgettable and the perfect way to close out an amazing semester!

Congratulations to Afro Floor Resident Abhi on becoming a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated., Omicron Psi Chapter! 💙

Abhi is a first year majoring in Landscape Architecture and minoring in City Planning in the College of Environmental Design!

Words from Abhi: “I never thought that I would join a fraternity, let alone one as amazing as Phi Beta Sigma. I would say to anyone who’d listen is that being a part of this is so much more than what meets the eye. I have developed more as a person and I am able to grow alongside a network of people who uplift not just themselves but their community. I hope that my ability to do this as a first year serves as inspiration to those who are interested and to spur on ideas of service within the greater black community.”

Congratulations to Afro Floor 24-25 Kaly and Seanbiron as well! Great presentation from the Spring 26 initiates!

Meet Ousman, an intended Film & Media major and Journalism minor. Ousman had the rare opportunity to earn a spot on UC Berkeley Chess Club’s A Team, the top team of the UC Berkeley Chess Club. Ousman, a mostly self-taught player, has been competing in chess tournaments since 2021. This February, the A Team won the US Amateur Team West Tournament and are the current USATW Champions. In April, Ousman also received an award at the club’s Blitz tournament as the highest Under 2000 rating performance. Blacks are severely underrepresented in competitive chess, and Ousman is one of the only members — if not the sole member— of African descent on the Chess Club Team. Ousman’s goal is to encourage other Black and Brown youth to play chess and compete in tournaments, and has tutored elementary and secondary students in chess in the past.

FUN FACT: Chess enthusiasts would be thrilled to know that UC Berkeley is a BART’s ride away from the Mechanics Institute located in San Francisco, which is home to the longest-running chess club in the United States. At Mechanics, Ousman had the opportunity to meet Judit Polgár, the highest-rated woman Grandmaster in history.

Meet Vashti, a Neuroscience and Psychology double major! Since coming to Cal she has stayed active with Lacrosse with the Women’s Club Lacrosse team 🥍🫶🏾

Ever since Vashti moved to the states in sophomore year of high school she’s been playing Lacrosse! She is usually a defender but did goalie this season. She advises incoming students to have some sort of extracurricular activity to stay grounded and have something outside of class!

Shoutout to Residents Javin, Leila, Ousman, and Reggie!!! Right when school started these 4 Residents joined Hall Association and have been serving the unit 1 community 🫶🏾🩷

In Hall Association they have been able to host many events like Holiday Letters Home, Afternoon Tea, and the Break into Spring Giveaway! Through the hall association, they’ve put on multiple events to foster a stress-free environment for the residents!

Javin is a Public Health & African American Studies Major serving as an RHA Representative. She will be serving as Unit 1 HA President this upcoming fall, and urges any students to join the Hall Association to help other residents 🧡

Reggie is a Environmental Economics & Policy major in Rausser College of Natural Resources! He has served as VP of programming and stepped up to serve as President in the second semester! Reggies advice is to go for it even if you’re super nervous. He was too! He thought he wasn’t going to be able to join the HA, but took initiative when it was needed! Also, don’t forget to have fun! 🤎

Leila is a Business Administration major in the Speiker Program at Haas School of Business! She serves as VP of Marketing so creating flyers and social media content. Leilas advice is to not be afraid to put yourself out there, whether it’s through your campaign or the ideas you share with your team. By being creative and communicating what would stand out to residents, it can result in very memorable events.

Ousman is a freshman intended Film and Media major and Journalism minor. He serves as a Unit 1 RHA Representative and is a member of the Social Affairs Committee. He helped organize RHA and Unit 1 Hall Association events, including the Res Hall Roulette. RHA is a great way to meet your fellow dorm mates as well as give back to the community

Earlier this semester RA Layomi and RA Izzy hosted Cafe Catch up ☕️🥯🥞!

This was a event centered around community engagement for residents to set good intentions for their Spring Semester while grabbing breakfast before class!

Afro Floor wrote affirmations for themselves and one another. As well had choices between matcha, carmel frappes, hot coffee, bagels and more!
