Meet your 2026–2027 EAVP, Selina Mendez! 🐻💙💛

Hi Bears! My name is Selina Mendez, and I’m beyond honored to serve as your External Affairs Vice President for this academic year.🪻

I’m a first-generation Latina from Santa Ana, California, studying Cognitive Science and Political Science. My advocacy journey started back in high school through the Boys & Girls Club of Central Orange Coast, where serving as OC Youth of the Year gave me my first experience with state-level lobbying during the statewide competition.

Since my freshman year, I’ve been deeply involved in the ASUC. I started in the Office of the President under Sydney Roberts as the CalThon Hospitality Chair, later served as CalThon Executive Director & DEIBJ Director under Shri Gopal, and last year had the privilege of serving as one of your Latine Community Endorsed ASUC Senators. Beyond campus, I’ve worked on statewide and national initiatives including the CDPH “Never a Bother” suicide prevention campaign, institutionalizing the first ASUC Mental Health Lobbying Day, Project Super Bloom, USHCC, and the National Conference of State Legislatures.

As your EAVP, I also serve on the UCSA Board of Directors, coordinating advocacy across all 9 UC campuses at the UCOP, Regents, local, state, and federal levels; like bringing over 24 students to UCSA Student Organizing Summit. What motivates me every day is the need to unify our campus and stand in solidarity across communities. I want to make sure every student feels connected to this office and knows we can make tangible, institutional change.

Outside of work, I love dancing salsa, playing and singing mariachi music, being in community, and drinking coffee! I’m always open for coffee chats, so feel free to check my bCal and reach out. I’m here to serve you all and make the ASUC as transparent and accessible as possible!☕️

Join the University of California Student Association (UCSA) in leading our Identity-Based Advocacy Days programming! This is a unique opportunity for UC students to engage directly in state-level advocacy, elevate student voices, and push for policies that reflect the needs of our diverse communities.

Selected participants will take part in a fully funded, full-day trip to Sacramento, where they will receive advocacy training, connect with student leaders from across the UC system, and meet directly with state legislators and their staff. Throughout the day, students will engage in a conference-style program focused on key issues impacting that identities communities, followed by coordinated lobbying visits at the State Capitol.

*NOTE: This is different from being selected as a Trip Delegate. As a Steering Committee Campus Representative for UC Berkeley, you will help lead and facilitate the logistical organization of one of the following Lobby Days alongside all the 8 other UC campuses. If you are interested in being selected as a Trip Delegate, please check back in Spring 2027. This is a time-consuming role (3-4 hours/week), so please review these responsibilities and reach out to clarinde_sanft@berkeley.edu if you have any questions.

The Department of Homeland Security has proposed to impose a $103,265 fee to all H-1B cap-subject applications. If passed, the fee would become a detrimental barrier for international students and new immigrants seeking to join the US workforce.

Submit a public comment to the federal register by September 24th, 20:59PST / 23:59 EST to speak against the H-1B Fee. Anonymous comments are accepted!!

Happy Latine Heritage Month! 🤎✨

Advocacy is at the heart of our history, it’s how generations have built power, fought for their rights, and supported one another. But “Latine” isn’t just one background. It encompasses Afro-Latine, Indigenous, LGBTQIA+, and so many intersecting communities.

True advocacy means uplifting all of these diverse voices, traditions, and experiences. As a Latina myself, we need to continue standing in coalition with one another and, most importantly, be proud of our heritage and culture! 🫂💛 by @ucbeavp

Mental health doesn’t exist in a vacuum, it is deeply political, and advocacy IS suicide prevention.

To truly protect lives, we have to dismantle the systemic harms that cause trauma in our communities:
• Abolishing ICE is mental health support.
• Sexual violence prevention is suicide prevention.
• Fighting systemic injustice protects mental wellness.

Care looks like action, policy change, and solidarity.⭐️
