✨ Visiting Artist Lecture: Zeina Barakeh ✨ Thursday, October 22 at 5:00 PM Room 285, Anthropology & Art Practice Building, UC Berkeley We are excited to welcome Zeina Barakeh to the Department of Art Practice as part of our Fall Visiting Artist Lecture Series! This event is free and open to the public. “CYBOTAGE: Brain-Computer Interfaces and the Politics of Public Art” In this talk, Zeina Barakeh will map the trajectory of her work from gallery and museum contexts into public art, using research to lodge her practice within—and against—the infrastructures and ethics of global security. Her project CYBOTAGE—an ongoing investigation into brain–computer interfaces and military human enhancement—extends across public works, workshops with veterans, webinars, and research as artistic intervention. Zeina Barakeh (b. Beirut) is a Palestinian Lebanese artist whose work is shaped by lived experience in wartime Lebanon. She examines the militarization of the body, surveillance, human enhancement, and the shifting boundaries between humans and machines across kinetic and cyberwarfare. @zeina.barakeh 📍 Anthropology & Art Practice Building, Room 285 UC Berkeley #ZeinaBarakeh #ucbevents #artistlecture #ucbartpractice by @ucberkeley_artpractice

Worth Ryder Art Gallery and the Department of Art Practice are thrilled to announce “Missed America: Half Massed,” a group exhibition featuring multidisciplinary artworks from students in @ucberkeley_artpractice Global Perspectives in Contemporary Art Class. Beginning with Ronald Reagan in 1985, each incoming American president has selected an artwork to display at their Inauguration, using it to symbolize the aspirations of the new administration. The works are intended as messages to the people, sometimes readily legible, sometimes more coded, and sometimes conveying meanings that are not immediately apparent. At times, selected artworks have contradicted the administration’s stated ideals or revealed its covert intentions. With the 2026 midterm elections looming, each student in the class created an artwork representing their hopes or perhaps warnings for what they wish or perhaps dread the next administration might bring. Some works question the possibilities of hope, others image pathways for growth and unity. Please join us for the opening reception of Missed America: Half Massed Concurrent with the opening reception of the ASCP student exhibition: Exit Signs Wednesday, October 14th, 2026, 4pm - 6pm Featuring artworks by: Yulieth Aguilar, Tallulah Buscher, Sam Chen, Karyl Dimaculangan, Alex Ding, Angelina Feng, Clarissa Gonzalez, Violet Jones, Iris Kim, Nina Li, Henry Oh, Tindra Olsson-Hoffman, Charlie Pace, Regina Pena Olea, Ana Sandoval Ortiz, Flor Santiago, Isai Soto, Jasper Wang, Rosie Yuan. ⏱️Gallery Hours: Wednesday: 1pm-6pm Tuesday/Thursday: 12pm-6pm Friday: 1pm-5pm 🗓Opening reception: Wednesday October 14th, 2026, 4pm - 6pm Worth Ryder Art Gallery 🗓Exhibition dates: Wednesday, October 14th - Friday, November 6th 2026 📍The Little WRAG, Worth Ryder Art Gallery, UC Berkeley, Anthropology and Art Practice Building, (AAPB Rm 116), Near the intersection of College Ave and Bancroft Way 📰Poster Design courtesy of Isai Soto #ContemporaryArt #InaugurationArtworks #Global Perspectives #AlAndeSouza #Artpractice UCberkeley by @ucberkeley_artpractice
The Department of German and the Department of Art Practice are excited to announce the success of the exhibit Hidden Layers: AI Infrastructures and Hallucinations, curated by Antonio Somaini with Hannes Bajohr, Sonja Thiel and Elena Yu, in dialogue with the France–Berkeley research initiative “The Latent Spaces of Culture,” that was on display at the Worth Ryder Art Gallery. In neural networks, the “hidden layers” are the intermediate strata of transformation between input and output — the computational structures where data are transformed, weighted, and recombined into increasingly abstract, distributed representations that no human eye can read. The exhibition Hidden Layers: AI Infrastructures and Hallucinations takes this term as its conceptual frame, bringing together seventeen international artists and researchers working at the intersection of contemporary art and machine learning to make visible what artificial intelligence keeps out of sight: its planetary infrastructures and computational latent spaces, its colonial and ideological underpinnings, its misrecognitions and hallucinations, and its transformation of our relation to the past through the silent reprocessing of pre-existing cultural forms. The exhibition is organized in four sections: “In the Latent Spaces of Culture,” “Material Infrastructures,” “Colonial Imaginaries: From Misrecognition to Generative Slopaganda,” and “Hallucinations and Psychedelia.” Featuring works by Nouf Aljowaysir; Gašper and Nina Beguš & Metahaven; Grégory Chatonsky; Kate Crawford & Vladan Joler; Asma Kazmi & Jill Miller; Andrea Khôra; Occitane Lacurie & Barnabé Sauvage; Greg Niemeyer; and Mario Santamaria & Alex Saum-Pascual. Hidden Layers is a collaboration between the Department of German and the Worth Ryder Art Gallery at the Department of Art Practice. It is part of the France–Berkeley research initiative The Latent Spaces of Culture: a collaboration between UC Berkeley, the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris, and the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). #UCBerkeley #Art #ArtificialIntelligence #Berkeley #Hallucinations by @ucberkeley_artpractice

Thanks Prof. @_cathyclu_ for hosting a lecture series in Ceramics! 💥 Repost @ucberkeley_clay: Last week we had a great visit with artist Kristen Stain! They spoke about their journey starting in illustration and sportswear design, reclaiming their education, earth honoring practices, Black Clay workshops, and their work as a steward of @arokocooperative. Thank you, Kristen, for sharing your work, process, and journey with our students! 💫 @ketchupstain ✨✨✨ From their website: “My work merges ancestral traditions, emphasizing community, reverence for the earth, and Afro-Indigenous practices, with my technical design background. I use dark clay bodies and coil building to explore themes of beauty, identity, and Black ceramic history, often drawing from African diaspora jewelry, fabric, and hairstyles. Alongside my artistic practice, I teach hand-building classes at Clay Clubhouse in Oakland and developed Black Clay, a ceramic workshop series for the Black community to connect, create, and learn. I also steward Aroko Cooperative, a design collective dedicated to Black Liberation, where we create tools for communal prosperity, including recent work for the National Black Food and Justice Alliance.” ✨✨✨ Stay tuned for more of our visiting artists! @torreya.c @erikscollon Maryam Yousif @wxzhang25 🔥 @ucberkeley_artpractice by @ucberkeley_artpractice

Stop by the Anthropology and Art Practice Building lobby between October 5-November 24 to view a new video installation in the VIDRINE! Part of the “Kōmij Mour Ijin / Our Life Is Here” project currently on view across the UC Berkeley campus throughout the 2026-2027 academic year, the VIDRINE presents four artists’ video responses to nuclear history, colonialism, and climate change in the Pacific, made in the wake of the Kōmij Mour Ijin / Our Life Is Here voyage. In “Mejenkwaad,” poet and Marshall Islands Climate Envoy Kathy Jetn̄il-Kijiner takes the form of a demon out of Marshallese legend—traditionally a destroyer of villages, here a witness to colonialism’s damage to land and community. The program also includes her work “Anointed” about radioactive racism and the long quest for peace and justice. Michael Light’s “BRAVO, ECHO 1954–2023” returns to the site of the Castle Bravo nuclear test, tracing its mark on the landscape across nearly seventy years. In “Mammoth,” Michael Pinsky carries a mammoth tooth from England’s eroding Norfolk coast to the Castle Bravo crater at Bikini Atoll, linking the mammoth’s climate-driven extinction to today’s rising seas. David Buckland’s videos of his “Bikini Texts” are projected into and on the waves inside the Bikini Atoll. The words projected, including ‘Our Life is Here’, all reflect on the Marshallese culture, the traumatic nuclear explosions detonated on Bikini and the rising sea levels. Video compilation produced by Jordan Dozzi. Guided by the Environmental Arts and Humanities Initiative (EAHI), “Kōmij Mour Ijin / Our Life Is Here” centers survivance and the legacy of nuclear testing through satellite exhibitions and installations. Together, these programs invite the UC Berkeley community to engage with Marshallese histories and perspectives while exploring nuclear legacies, climate change, cultural resilience, and our shared futures. Visit the link in our bio to learn more about the project. Image: Michael Light, BRAVO Echo 1954–2023, 2025, still from the six-minute single-channel video. by @ucberkeley_artpractice
