Ph.D. candidate Alex Chow has received a dissertation fellowship from the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange to support his project, "Feeling Freedom: Affective Politics, Monetary Order, and Hong Kong’s Modernity (1950s–2019)." Through archival research, oral histories, participant observation, and interdisciplinary analysis, the project examines how competing economic and political systems shaped understandings of freedom, democracy, and sovereignty in Hong Kong from the postwar era through 2019. by @ucbgeography

It's officially live! "Swept Off The Map," created by Maria Toldi and Geography Senior Cole Haddock for @streetspiritnews, is a five-piece, seven-month investigative series documents the scope, scale, and consequences of encampment sweeps in #Richmond, #Berkeley, and #Oakland. The project creates invaluable new tools that will make it easier to understand unsheltered homelessness in these three East Bay cities, as well as the politics and policies that define the region’s response to homelessness. Chief among these are:

- An interactive map that visualizes four years of encampment closure data in Oakland, and
- An in-depth series that investigates the ins and outs of local homeless policy in Richmond, Berkeley, and Oakland, including their encampment management policies, the government officials leading the local homeless response, sources of funding, and more.

Undergraduate students in @laki.talki’s class “Audio Narratives of the Bay Area” had the chance to visit the @kqed office in San Francisco’s Mission District. Students heard from KQED reporter and editor Dana Cronin who covers climate change, environmental issues, food and agriculture; afternoon host Natalia Navarro and community reporter Carlos Cabrera Lomeli. Students also shared what they have been working on for their final projects in the course. by @ucbgeography

@ce_tracey (PhD '22)'s new book, Salt Lakes: An Unnatural History, is a wide-ranging and deeply researched exploration of some of the planet’s most overlooked ecosystems.

Blending environmental reportage, cultural history, and memoir, Tracey’s book takes readers from the Great Salt Lake and California’s Mono Lake to Central Asia and beyond, tracing the fragile futures of saline lakes around the world. Drawing on years of fieldwork and travel, she documents how these landscapes—often dismissed as barren—are in fact ecologically rich and globally significant, supporting migratory bird populations and complex microbial life.

Congrats to Dr. Tracey, whose work exemplifies the department’s commitment to engaged, globally attuned scholarship at the intersection of environment, society, and space.

We are excited to announce our Geography Department Commencement speaker: @veena.dubal

Veena Dubal is Professor of Law at the University of California, Irvine, School of Law and General Counsel for the American Association of University Professors. Her research focuses broadly on law, technology, and precarious workers, combining legal and empirical analysis to explore issues of labor and inequality.

Professor Dubal has written numerous articles in top law and social science journals and publishes essays in the popular press. TechCrunch has called Prof. Dubal an “unlikely star in the tech world,” and her expertise is frequently sought by regulatory bodies, legislators, judges, workers, and unions in the U.S. and Europe. Prior to joining the academy, Professor Dubal was a public interest attorney and Berkeley Law Foundation Fellow at the Asian Law Caucus where she founded a taxi worker project and represented Muslim Americans in civil rights cases.

Professor Dubal received a B.A. from Stanford University and holds J.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, Berkeley. by @ucbgeography

Student Spotlight: Vincent Nghiem is a first year double majoring in Environmental Sciences @natureatcal and Geography @ucbgeography. This semester, Vincent’s coursework in post-apocalyptic botany, fire ecology, and geospatial technologies represent an interesting confluence of disparate fields of study that greatly informed his reporting on the October 2024 Piney Fire @hastingsreserve.

In his newsletter piece, Vincent explores the effects of the fire on a managed landscape, the blue oak restoration efforts of @grizzlycorps fellow Natalia Valdes, and her perspective on land stewardship.
