Our very own Firelighters are Winners of the @nationalasla ‘s Award of Excellence for Student Collaboration’

Congratulations to: Nicholas Hardt-Mason, Student ASLA; Helene Hoffman; Stasha Leonard; Amber Lin; Vallerie Morones, Student ASLA; Mary Kate O’Connor, Student ASLA; Fermin Pereira; Simone Shupper; Eavan Swanson; Lauren Swing, Student ASLA; and their faculty advisor: Emily Schlickman, ASLA

Over ten weeks, eleven landscape architecture and environmental design students trained as prescribed fire practitioners and volunteered on seven burns with community partners. Their service helped to expand prescribed fire capacity, shift wildfire perceptions, and move design education closer to practice, from simply drawing fire on paper to tending it. Working with fire professionals, landowners, prescribed burn associations, fire ecologists, and Indigenous practitioners, students advanced beneficial fire as a key strategy for reducing risk in fire-prone landscapes. The cohort now serves as an on-call volunteer crew, developing a public exhibition on fire messaging, establishing a long-term fire plot, and mentoring future Firelighters. taken in Hunt Hall by @ucdavis_laed

Join the Arboretum Habitat Horticulture Internship! -Deadline Aug. 20, 2026
As part of UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden’s Learning by Leading program, the
year-long Habitat Horticulture internship focuses on public outreach, environmental
education, and scientific research focused on pollinator interactions. This team’s work is
centered in the habitat gardens of the Environmental GATEway, located at the west end of theArboretum and Public Garden. Students will use this area as a living laboratory with
collections that include the hummingbird garden, the insect pollinator gardens, the native
meadow basin, and the large-scale storm water management system. Students will gain
hands-on experience in climate-ready gardening, community engagement, environmental
education, and team-oriented leadership. Interns will also conduct research projects on
plant-pollinator interactions in these gardens using iNaturalist, beginning in winter quarter.

Internship Details
●
This internship is a full-year commitment, and can be taken for 1 academic unit for
each quarter completed
●
Interns are expected to complete 3 hours of work per week
●
During the Fall 2026 quarter, interns will meet for lectures and hands-on field work on
Fridays 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Timing for the Winter and Spring quarters will be decided later
and taking interns’ schedules into account

This internship is open to all students interested in horticulture, ecology, environmental
science, or making a meaningful difference on campus. No prior experience necessary!

UC Davis Arboretum Sustainable Horticulture Internship - Designing & Building Sustainable Gardens
Application - Deadline: Saturday August 8th at midnight!

In this internship, students will:

Learn the essential skills for sustainable horticulture: how to design and install drought resilient gardens and paths, plant and prune trees, design and construct irrigation,
maintain gardens, propagate plants, and much more!

Become familiar with landscape plants, both California native drought tolerant plants as well as unique plants from across the world that we have found to be particularly
suited to the central valley’s changing climate.

Collaborate to design and construct several
gardens transforming the campus as part of the
UC Davis GATEways Project.

 Practice collaboration and leadership skills.
This is a hands-on, full year internship that earns interns 1 unit each quarter completed!
We will meet weekly on Tuesday afternoons from 2-5 PM during the Fall quarter. The first meeting is September 29th, 2026. (Timing will be more flexible during the Winter and Spring quarters. Meeting regularly as a group during the Fall is essential to the activities that we will be doing in the Winter and Spring). It is most important that you have flexibility to budget 3 hours per week each quarter for the entire school year!

If you’re interested in learning more about our program before you apply, check out the sustainable horticulture web page: https://arboretum.ucdavis.edu/sustainable-horticulture taken in UC Davis by @ucdavis_laed

Youssef Yassin is an SED major and one of only 5 undergraduates selected to give a commencement speech at graduation this year. “My speech focuses on resilience and the shared experience of adapting to UC Davis, especially the feeling of not initially belonging,” he said. “Through community and perseverance, we all found our place and grew into Aggies. The message centers on carrying that resilience forward as we step into the next chapter of our lives,” he said.

Pictured is Youssef holding a smartphone with a photo of him and his father, who recently passed. His father was a source of inspiration to Youssef’s sense of resilience. Swipe for a close-up of the photo.

Congratulations to Youssef and to our Class of 2026 🥳 taken in Hunt Hall by @ucdavis_laed
