Using research and extension to advance sustainability in animal agriculture.

POSTS STORIES REELS

How lucky are we to have this in our own backyard? 🐮 💙 💛

The UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences’ Beef Cattle Facilities at UC Davis are more than just pens and pastures – it’s where students learn real-world cow/calf management through hands-on experience at every stage of care.

We visited the beef barn on campus which is primarily used for cow/calf management. After calves are weaned at our Sierra Foothills Research and Extension Center in Browns Valley, they come here and to adjacent pastures to graze for the summer before returning back to the Sierra Foothills to calve in the fall.

Thank you to our visual specialist, Kevin, for taking us along for the ride! 😎📸🐂🐂

As we celebrate the upcoming Salute to Ag Football Game at @ucdavis, it’s worth recognizing the unexpected link between livestock and sports! 🐂

One cowhide can be crafted into high-quality leather balls used in sports like football, volleyball, soccer and basketball at the professional and collegiate levels. Sure, not all sports balls are made from genuine leather, but these regulation-grade balls showcase how using every part of the animal means less waste in landfills, more value from each animal, and fewer resources needed to make certain products.

Beyond the hide, rendering transforms nearly every part of the cow like bones, fats, and organs into valuable products like gelatin, soaps, medicine and fertilizers. This full-use approach reduces waste, maximizes resources, and supports sustainable agriculture. ♻️

So, come join us on Saturday, September 27 inside the UC Davis Health Stadium to see how livestock are helping people and the planet score big. Discounted tickets available using promo code, CLEAR at checkout. 🎟

With support from the California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Livestock Enteric Methane Emission Reduction Research Program (LEMER-RP), our team at the UC Davis CLEAR Center have been deep in the weeds, managing projects that look at how interventions early in an animal’s life may influence health, performance and methane emissions, and what that could mean for sustainable beef production.

While our very first early-life study has concluded, the research continues. Lead Ph.D. student, Madison Kindberg is now bringing together the data collected throughout the study, analyzing the results and looking at what they can tell us about the potential benefits and practical applications for beef producers. This part of the process is an important part of bridging the gap between research and the realities of beef production. by @ucdavisclear

Did you know animal agriculture has a connection to some of your favorite Halloween candies? 🍬

The chewy texture in your favorite gummies and even candy corn comes from gelatin, a protein derived from animal byproducts like pig skin, cattle hides, and bones. This is where rendering comes in. By upcycling the materials leftover from meat production, the rendering industry creates valuable ingredients instead of letting waste sit in landfills.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that wasted food is responsible for 58% of methane emissions from municipal solid waste landfills. Rendering helps prevent some of those emissions by repurposing animal byproducts into useful everyday products. ♻️

Agriculture needs more than just educators. It needs people who are passionate about sharing its story and those who are willing to put in the time it takes to make an impact. 🤝

Broadening the reach of agricultural education means connecting with more students, reaching new audiences and showing the next generation just how much ag has to offer.

Hear from ag educators like Kathryn Teixeira of UC Davis in a new video highlighting Ag Education and the people behind it, including @dadsonfarms, a family that is passionate about show pigs and keeping the industry alive. 🐷

We had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with Dadson Farms and social influencers Karis and Krew Dadson! 🔥

Together, we captured the heart of American Agriculture, the importance of FFA programs, experiences like showing pigs and agricultural education needed to understand modern farming, animal care and environmental sustainability, to showcasing the powerful impact of social media in distributing shared knowledge to capture the true essence of sustainable ag.

The final video is the result of extensive planning, collaboration, and thoughtful storytelling, all aimed at producing a narrative that resonates beyond the farm. By creating opportunities for audiences to engage with the people behind the industry, we contribute to making agriculture more accessible, strengthening public understanding, and inspiring the next generation to find their place in it. 🐖

We’re absolutely honored to have played a part in bringing these voices together and sharing a story that deserves to be heard. THANK YOU again to the Dadsons, @morganwonderly from @calpolyswineunit, and Shelby Sopocy @ucdavisswine and Kathryn Teixeira from UC Davis. Your insights truly helped bring this story to life!

You can watch the full video on the UC Davis CLEAR Center YouTube. You won’t be disappointed. 🎬

Addressing how to feed a growing population while minimizing food waste plays an important role in mitigating climate change.

In a new epsiode of the CLEAR Conversations Podcast, our amazing host, Tracy Sellers is joined by Minerva Ringland, Senior Manager of Climate & Insights and Angel Veza, Director of Strategic Innovatin and Capital at ReFED, a national nonprofit focused on reducing food waste. ♻️

The conversation focused on the environmental consequences of food waste, emerging solutions across the supply chain and easy steps consumers can take to help address the problem.

“Food is a particularly important part of the landfill methane equation. Ringland cited the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency analysis indicating that food accounts for at least 58% of landfill methane emissions.”
