The Dept. of Design hosts “Bring Your Own Mug,” open-to-all office hours, open house style. Come and go as you wish. Thursdays 1:30-2:30 pm through 12/3. No host on 10/15 or 11/26. Meet in the Cruess Hall Courtyard for tea, coffee, and conversation. If the weather turns bad we’ll move into the Open Lab. Tomorrow, Thursday 10/15/2026: BRIDGEGOOD, an Oakland-based non-profit dedicated to Design Equity and Racial Justice will preview opportunities they offer. Our students have learned much from BRIDGEGOOD, and their presentations are always inspiring. Perhaps you’ll be one of the next designers they select for your work to be featured on a billboard, for a chance to learn about Design for Good, or to become a (paid and well connected) Design Apprentice. The work of British artist-embroiderer Lynn Setterington is the subject of the UC Davis Design Museum’s 2026–27 opening exhibition, "Connecting Threads (together): Textile Works by Lynn Setterington.” In this brief video, the artist/designer gives insight into the exhibition which features works that encompass themes of identity and belonging, health and well-being, sustainability, community cohesion and social inequality, offering sensory testaments of life today.

Today Sophie Weston Chien, an assistant professor of environmental design whose series Touching Toxicity maps contamination and remediation across the East Bay, will give a talk as part of The Maria Manetti Shrem Institute for Sustainable Design, Fashion & Textiles at UC Davis. Weston Chien will join Natalia Duong, assistant professor of Asian American studies and science and technology studies, and Akshita Sivakumar, assistant professor of design, in a conversation built around "Touching Toxicity." The panelists will discuss toxicity, remediation, and how artistic and design practice might offer new timescales and tactics for environmental justice. The conversation takes place on Monday, Oct. 5 at 4:45 p.m. in Cruess Hall 1003. Free and open to the public.

Quiltmaker Anna Von Mertens, who creates research-based work weaving together science, history, and materiality, will give a talk tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 2 as part of The Maria Manetti Shrem Institute for Sustainable Design, Fashion & Textiles. The talk centers on the life of Henrietta Leavitt, a pioneering astronomer who worked at the Harvard College Observatory studying glass plate photographs of the night sky. The hand-stitched quilts and pencil drawings Von Mertens made based on Leavitt's work appreciate the attentive path to discovery, celebrating labor and insight. Von Merten’s talk is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. in Cruess Hall 1003. Free and open to all.

Please join the Maria Manetti Shrem Art Studio Program for an artist talk by Alice Bucknell on Thursday, Oct. 1 in Cruess Hall, 1002 at 5:30 p.m. Bucknell is an artist, writer and educator whose work explores the affective dimensions of video games as interfaces for understanding complex systems, relationships, and forms of knowledge. They are interested in the limits of scientific knowledge and systems thinking, the weird possibilities of play, and the ecological dimensions of games that can dissolve binaries like humans vs environment, natural vs synthetic intelligence, and self vs world. Their video game, The Alluvials, was the first video game to enter SFMOMA’s permanent collection. A 2025 Creative Capital Awardee and a 2026 Resident at La Becque, they are currently a fellow at Onassis ONX and the Serpentine Arts Technologies Future Art Ecosystems Research and Development Fellowship (both 2026 - 2027). Free and open to all.

Design alum Kausi Raman, he co-founder and CEO of @itschompshop , a kid-safe power tool for young inventors and creators, will visit James Housefield's DES 001 “Intro to Design" on 9/29/2026 in the Pitzer Center, 9 am-10:20 am. Chompshop was named one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2025, and in February 2026 named “Creative Toy of the Year” by industry specialists, beating the biggest names in the America toy industry including Mattel.

The Gorman Museum of Native American Art at UC Davis presents "Gifts from the Heart: New Acquisitions at the Gorman" which opens on Sept. 23. Showcasing new gifts from private collections across the country, the exhibition features a selection of artworks by more than 40 artists in a range of media including sculpture, painting, prints, mixed media, ceramics, basketry and carving. We are deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Konstantinos “Kosta” Papamichael, a visionary researcher, educator, and leader in the field of daylighting design and founder of the California Lighting Technology Center at UC Davis. Over his distinguished career, Professor Papamichael authored numerous publications, held multiple patents, and received the 2013 Illuminating Engineering Society Presidential Award for his leadership in developing the Recommended Practice for Daylighting Buildings. His pioneering research, mentorship, and dedication to integrating daylight, electric lighting, and building systems have left an enduring legacy that continues to inspire colleagues, students, and the broader lighting community.
