It's a new chapter in specialty veterinary care for Southern California!

Earlier this month, we celebrated the dedication of the Janice K. Hobbs UC Davis Veterinary Medical Center Southern California. The new center is seven times larger than its predecessor, increasing annual patient capacity from 4,000 to 15,000. Expanded services will include emergency, critical and intensive care, advanced diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, medical oncology and specialty surgery.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Janice K. Hobbs, our philanthropic partners, faculty, staff and everyone who helped bring this vision to life!

🔬 For Postdoc Appreciation Week, we’re highlighting the researchers whose work advances veterinary medicine and human health. Meet Ana Ripolles-Garcia, DVM, Ph.D.! During her time at UC Davis, Ana contributed to research advancing our understanding of inherited optic nerve disease.

Her work focused on analyzing ophthalmic imaging and functional data to investigate a mutation in the OPA1 gene associated with autosomal dominant optic atrophy, an inherited condition that can cause vision loss. This research offers valuable insights into the disease and may help inform future treatment development.

Ana has since begun a comparative ophthalmology residency at North Carolina State University. We’re grateful for her contributions to research at UC Davis and proud to celebrate her work and the many postdoctoral scholars advancing discovery in veterinary medicine and human health!

Our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit offers high-quality care to neonatal foals and crias, with the help of around-the-clock technicians, students, residents and faculty. These newborns are some of the most vulnerable and sickest patients we see. To help cover expenses and purchase new equipment, we are crowdfunding for the month of October.

One of our October crowdfunding campaign focuses on support for house officers. What are house officers? They are veterinarians pursuing advanced specialty training through internships, residencies, and fellowships. At the UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine, approximately 140 house officers train across 53 disciplines.

Throughout that journey, they take part in specialized education, professional development, clinical training, and programs designed to help them grow as veterinarians and future specialists.

The Animal Welfare Assessment Contest Team at the UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine is a newly revitalized, veterinary student-led effort to compete as a team in the AVMA Animal Welfare Assessment Contest®. In this contest, attendees use evidence-based, ethical reasoning to assess animal welfare in individual virtual scenarios and a team assessment at an operating animal facility.

During the month of October, you can support their Crowdfunding campaign and contribute to the education and development of future veterinarians' ability to assess, communicate, and advance animal welfare.

New born foals are some of the most vulnerable patients we see. Their survival depends heavily on the care they receive in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. During October, you can help support the NICU's crowdfunding campaign to provide additional support and equipment to treat newborns.

This week, UC Davis is launching a crowdfunding campaign to help the veterinarians in our advanced specialty training programs. What does it take to become a veterinary specialist? Years of hard work and dedication to achieve their goals. We have approximately 140 interns, residents, and fellows training across a wide range of veterinary disciplines.

Please consider helping them benefit from opportunities beyond their day-to-day clinical training, including:
🐾 Specialized education and training

🐾 Professional development

🐾 Programs that strengthen connection and community

🐾 Resources available when personal emergencies and unexpected challenges arise

These veterinarians play a crucial role in patient care and bring so much to our veterinary community. Let’s help support them through this important campaign.

Your gift can make all the difference: www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/crowdfund/HouseOfficers
