Every year graduate program leaders in the Nicholson School of Communication and Media (NSCM) collect donations of home goods for NSCM graduate international students. This year, the generosity of NSCM staff and faculty, along with the UCF Women’s Club, filled the donation room to the brim!

“Donated home goods provide our incoming international students with more than essential items—they offer comfort, stability and a sense of belonging as they begin a new chapter far from home,” says Michael Haney, graduate admissions coordinator for NSCM. “These thoughtful contributions help students settle into their new environment, reduce financial stress and feel welcomed by our campus community.”

We are excited to welcome Dr. Kathy Fitzpatrick as the new director of the Nicholson School of Communication and Media (NSCM) at the @ucfsciences!

Dr. Fitzpatrick brings extensive leadership experience in higher education, having served as a professor, director and senior associate dean for academic affairs at institutions including the University of South Florida, American University and Florida International University. She holds a J.D. from Southern Methodist University and M.S. and B.S. degrees in journalism from West Virginia University.

Dr. Fitzpatrick’s expertise in public relations, public diplomacy, ethics and social responsibility, communications law and crisis management, along with her strong record of research and academic leadership, will help strengthen NSCM’s multi-disciplinary programs, research, collaboration and partnerships.

An internationally recognized scholar, Fitzpatrick has received numerous awards for her research, including the 2021 Distinguished Scholar Award from the International Studies Association’s Diplomatic Studies Division. Her works include Diplomacy’s Public Turn: Prospects for Theory and Practice, U.S. Public Diplomacy: An Uncertain Fate and Responsible Advocacy: Ethics in Public Relations.

“I am thrilled to join the outstanding faculty, staff and students in the Nicholson School of Communication and Media at one of most innovative universities in the nation,” Fitzpatrick says. “I look forward to collaborating with campus and external partners to elevate the school’s standing as a leader in communication and media education and research and to build on its tradition of excellence as we shape a future defined by imagination, innovation and achievement.”

Congratulations to electronic journalism student Dwayne Jones for his internship with the @todayshow!

Since starting his internship in June, Dwayne has had the opportunity to gain direct experience across many aspects of broadcast journalism, seeing how stories come to life starting with a pitch to airing on national television.

To celebrate National Intern Day, The Today Show opened its program with a special spotlight for their interns, where Dwayne was recognized for his hard work and representing @ucf.edu with pride. ⚔️

Advertising and Public relation students at NSCM are making a great impact on the Orlando community, and the local industry is recognizing their outstanding work and passion for the field! Congratulations to these students for their well-deserved honors and recognition!

Yzabella de Los Santos earned the American Advertising Federation (AAF) of Orlando’s first ever Intern of the Year ADvocate award, which acknowledges the remarkable contributions of Orlando-based individuals influencing their fields.

Andrew Bower won the AAF Orlando Education Scholarship, which is awarded to dedicated advertising students to bolster the next generation of advertising professionals.

Arley Scarborough won the Florida Public Relations Association Orlando Intern of the Year Award, which recognizes interns who demonstrate exceptional professionalism and outstanding contributions during their internship.

UCF is topping more charts for its game design programs!

GameDesigning.org, the educational platform and digital resource hub for aspiring video game designers, recently ranked UCF among the “Top 5 Best Game Design Schools in Florida for 2026,” recognizing the programs that prepare students for careers in the game design industry after graduating.

UCF is no stranger to notoriety when it comes to its game design programs. The Princeton Review ranked the undergraduate Games and Interactive Media program at No. 3 in the world for 2026, with the graduate program FIEA coming in at No. 2!

Graduating students help fill the high demand for talent in the gaming industry and Orlando’s expanding modeling and simulation fields.

Congratulations to electronic journalism student Kiara Velez for being selected as a 2026 recipient of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) Scholarship Program!

Every year, the NAHJ awards scholarships and internship assistance to a select group of student applicants who have demonstrated exceptional dedication, talent and commitment to the field of journalism and media.

Kiara, a member of @ucfnahj, was awarded the 2026 Ruben Salazar Scholarship, which will provide her with the funds to attend the upcoming NAHJ National Conference this July in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she will have the opportunity to train and network with industry professionals.

Winning awards from New York City to London!

Adjunct Lecturer Jennie Jarvis’ TV pilot script, “The Mannings”, is now a finalist for the first ever Raindance Discovery List at the 34th Raindance Film Festival Script Competition. Later this month, she will be traveling to London to pitch her script to film industry executives and meet fellow filmmakers.

Congratulations to Jennie as this is the second time her screenplay has won an award at a major film festival, after she won Best Series Comedy at the Big Apple Film Festival last year. It was also a Finalist at the Nashville Film Festival Screenwriting Competition and a Quarterfinalist in the Manchester Film Festival Screenwriting Competition.

Alumnus Heissam Jebailey has committed $25,000 to the endowed I'm In. Mentorship Fund through the College of Sciences, creating lasting opportunities to support and guide NSCM students through their academic journey.

After 26 years since earning his degree in advertising/public relations, Jebailey continues to give back to his alma mater in meaningful ways by building on a long-standing commitment to mentorship, philanthropy and community impact.

🎨💻 Where art meets computation

Nicholson School of Communication and Media (NSCM) Associate Professor Matthew Mosher is exploring the crossroads of creativity, code and materiality through a new exhibition of generative artworks and sculptures. Using artist-written algorithms, digital fabrication and hand-finishing techniques, Mosher’s work transforms mathematical processes into striking visual forms that challenge traditional boundaries.

From 3D-printed sculptures to large-scale wood forms and abstract digital canvases, this body of work examines how process, technology and human creativity can collaborate to shape new possibilities. Congratulations to Matthew on this innovative exhibition showcasing the creative research happening at NSCM.

🎬🏆 Congratulations to alumnus filmmaker Ross Widener on winning Cinemaslam at the Miami Film Festival for his documentary Ghost of the Marsh!

For over four decades, the festival has celebrated groundbreaking cinema and influential voices, with the Florida Cinemaslam Competition recognizing excellence in filmmaking and connecting creators with public audiences and industry professionals. Produced while Widener was still a student, the film’s recognition highlights the strength of documentary storytelling coming out of the Nicholson School of Communication and Media.
