Congratulations to Michael Woodford AB'77! With his win a share of the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, the University of Chicago now has 102 Nobel Prize winners associated with the University!

At @uchicago we're in our element when we're exploring bold ideas and making ground-breaking discoveries. The next generation of Nobel Prize winners are on campus now, working on substantive research as they pursue their interdisciplinary undergraduate education.

On September 18, undergraduate and MBA teams from UChicago, Wharton, MIT, Princeton, Columbia, and other universities came together for our inaugural AI-Enabled Investing Competition.

Teams built investment models live using code, Claude, and other AI tools — combining technical skills with real-time investment thinking.

A UChicago team took first place, with the competition judged by industry leaders from Blackstone, PEI, Nelumbium Capital, and across the investment world.

Natalie Orrantia is launching a career that’s out of this world (Saturn’s moon Titan, to be specific).

Natalie graduated from UChicago this spring with degrees in physics and astrophysics. With support from the College’s Jeff Metcalf Internship Program, she secured a summer research internship with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

This was Natalie’s second summer interning with JPL. Building on her previous JPL internship in astrobiology, she focused this summer on NASA’s upcoming Dragonfly mission.

Dragonfly is a robotic rotorcraft scheduled to launch in 2028 and land on Saturn’s moon Titan in 2034. Dragonfly will collect data from a variety of geologically important sites, including dunes, hydrocarbon lakes, and a crater where researchers believe some of the building blocks of life may have formed.

This summer, Natalie worked on a key piece of the project: modeling seismic data that might be waiting for Dragonfly on Titan.

“My project was to establish a baseline of seismic sound speeds through liquid ethane and methane,” Natalie said. “I spent most of the summer developing the experimental set-up to take these measurements. Using the thermodynamic fundamentals I learned at UChicago, I devised a system that could measure acoustic sound speeds with temperature and pressure data.

“The highlight of my internship was meeting the amazing scientists and engineers at JPL. I spent the summer in complete awe, finding myself in a position to have lunch with the scientists that developed the original mission concepts for the Perseverance and Curiosity rovers and the teams that built the Cassini Spacecraft. The engineers and scientists at JPL are incredibly welcoming.

“My internship has changed the course of my life. The experiences I've gained here, in both research and network, are unmatched of any internship opportunity I have ever had. I am incredibly thankful to the Metcalf Internship Program, whose support is what has gotten me this far!”

After this successful summer internship, Natalie has secured an additional year-long planetary science internship at JPL.
