Where did Cheerleaders Come From?

So who started Cheerleading! You probably picture pom-poms and high kicks when you hear the word “cheerleader”… but it didn’t start that way at all.

Cheerleading was born on November 2, 1898, at the University of Minnesota during a football game. The crowd was loud but unorganized. A student named Johnny Campbell jumped out of the stands, ran onto the field, and started leading the fans in a chant:

“Rah, Rah, Rah!
Ski-u-mah!
Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah!
Varsity! Varsity!
Minn-e-So-Tah!”

That moment is officially considered the birthday of organized cheerleading. Johnny Campbell became the very first cheerleader in sports history. And here’s the part that surprises most people: cheerleading started as an all-male activity. They were called “yell leaders.” It stayed that way for decades. Women weren’t even allowed on most squads until 1923 at Minnesota, and they didn’t really take over until World War II when the men went off to fight.

Our history runs deep and that includes the world of cheer. Let’s talk about it! 📣

From Norfolk State University and TSU’s soulful, band-backed “I’m So Glad” to Clark Atlanta’s high-energy “I Got Spirit, Yes I Do,” Black cheer has turned game day into more than a performance. It’s rhythm, call and response, and community in motion.

In the South, it carries particular cultural weight. Rooted in funk, gospel, and hip-hop, every stomp and chant reflects tradition and pride. But why is it so deeply rooted there and why does it remain vital?

Born in an era when self-expression was often stifled, cheer became a powerful outlet for visibility, leadership, and community on Black campuses.

GU writer Amber Little explores the cultural and historical significance of Black cheer across the South and how its influence continues to grow.
