Hints and Prefigurations: Codex Vatican A and the Lost Genre of Sacred Antiquarianism in New Spain

David H. Colmenares, Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature, will deliver an invited lecture titled "Indicios y prefiguraciones: el Códice Vaticano A y el género perdido del anticuarismo sacro novohispano" at UNAM's Instituto de Investigaciones Filológicas on April 28, 2026. The lecture reexamines the Codex Vaticanus A, a sixteenth-century pictorial manuscript in the Mesoamerican tradition, as the crystallization of two intersecting processes: the pictographic assimilation of Christian sacred images within indigenous visual traditions, and the transformation of images into historical evidence under an emerging antiquarian sensibility. Drawing on overlooked testimonies by Dominican friars in sixteenth-century Oaxaca —including fray Gregorio García's rare Predicación del evangelio en el Nuevo Mundo (1625) — Professor Colmenares reconstructs a lost genre of sacred antiquarianism and argues that the famous cosmological sections of the codex are best understood as speculative pictographies born of indigenous-Dominican co-creation. by @uci.complit

Études Jean-Luc Nancy Studies: Between and Betwixt Bodies: Jean-Luc Nancy’s Corpus III / Cruor

This second conference reconsiders Nancy’s philosophical opus in light of his final work, Cruor (Galilée 2022), translated into English by Jeff Fort and published by Fordham University Press under the title, Corpus III (2024). Returning to the conclusion of the first Corpus, Nancy reinterrogates the betweenness of bodies that defines the relation between self and other but also that between self and self. Those relations, always singular plural, occur only in their interruption, in their syncope, the rhythmic pulse of the blood (sanguis) that defines life when it does not spill out of its borders as cruor, as the ex-stasis of irreducible exteriority. In following Nancy’s reworking of the intra- and inter-corporal, we will reassess the fate of key Nancean concerns (finitude, being-with, technics, touching, sexistence, adoration, etc.) and his ever-shifting relation to the philosophical tradition in his later works.

Join us for a screening of Partition, and a discussion of the film with the filmmaker, Diana Allan!

When: March 3rd, 5-7 PM
Where: HG 1070

Partition fuses archival footage from the British occupation of Palestine with audio recorded of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, tracing lines of continuity left by seismic displacement. Silent films gathered in imperial collections hold histories that have barely been told, and ways of colonial seeing that seep into the present; Partition uses dialectical montage and asynchronous sound to examine both. Recovering Palestinian presence through story, voice and song, unraveling colonial pasts through soundscapes of the precarious present, Partition is a meditation on what bodies remember and empires forget.

Diana Allan is a filmmaker and professor of anthropology at McGill University. She is the co-director of the Nakba Archive and holds a Canada Research Chair in the anthropology of living archives. Her publications include Voices of the Nakba: A living history of Palestine (2021) and Refugees of the Revolution: Experiences of Palestinian Exile (2014).

Following the screening, there will be a discussion with the filmmaker, led by UCI Prof Margaux Fitoussi. by @uci.complit
