Who gets to decide what someone ā€œisā€? šŸ‘€

African American Studies Professor Sandra Harvey’s new book, ā€œThe Problem of Passingā€ (Duke University Press), flips the usual story of racial passing. Instead of focusing on the person suspected of passing, she looks at the person doing the suspecting, and what that kind of watching reveals about power, surveillance, and who gets policed.

Her research dates back to colonial Virginia’s pass laws in the 18th century to Choctaw citizenship records, to debates over the identities of women like Serena Williams and Michelle Obama. It also asks what surveillance technology really changes: even as it becomes more precise, the people it targets have stayed the same, and knowing more hasn’t meant more justice.

Read the full story in our link in bio.

Did you know that 1 in 4 UC Irvine students identify as Hispanic, but that nationally only one in 10 PhDs are? This Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re celebrating the scholars telling our stories. šŸ’›

Congratulations to Julia Nava (Film & Media Studies), Raúl Romo (Latin American & Iberian Cultures) and Isabel Verduzco (History). These PhD students are 2026 fellows of the Crossing Latinidades Humanities Research Initiative, and helping to build the pipeline for future scholars.

Their research on Salvadoran history, queer Latiné worldmaking, and cross-border media is opening doors for the next generation of Latino scholars. This is what humanities research can look like! šŸ‘€

Do YOU know what academic freedom means, and why it’s important? Well, last year we started a fellowship dedicated to exploring the topic by way of social media. 12 humanities undergrads spent the winter quarter reading and discussing texts on the topic with faculty from across the School of Humanities, and then in spring quarter made multi-media projects informed by the seminars and hands-on workshops with media professionals.

Check out all of their projects via the link in our bio. You’ll see that they made Instagram reels, long form videos, podcasts, and so much more!

Interested in joining the class this year? It’s a paid ($1,000) fellowship opportunity and will be open for applications starting in October. Stay tuned for more details!

David Kniffin ’04 has built a career around more than winning championships. As head coach of UC Irvine’s men’s volleyball team, he’s helping student-athletes grow as competitors, leaders and people.

In this episode of Alumni in Action, David reflects on his journey from UC Irvine student-athlete to head coach, the unexpected ways his philosophy education influences his leadership, and what it means to cultivate champions whose impact reaches far beyond volleyball.

Our ā€œAlumni Through the Decadesā€ series comes to a close with the 2010s, a time where streaming and social media was taking off. Alumni Lawrence Dalusung (B.A. film and media studies, ā€˜12), took his first film and media studies class and decided to go all-in to try and work in the entertainment industry.

Lawrence came to UCI and did just everything you can do on campus. He got involved with clubs like Kababayan, a Pilipinx-American cultural organization, joined SPOP, worked at the bookstore and even took a few new classes, like the film and media class that launched his career trajectory. He is currently the Director of Global Influencer Marketing at Audible, where he is building new ways for creators to reach audiences through storytelling.

Read more about Lawrence and his time here at UCI.

Video Description: A 10 second video of alumni Lawrence Dalusung with text that reads ā€œAlumni Through the Decades: 2010’sā€ and the next slide reads ā€œIt wasn’t until my third year that I took a film class and immediately knew that I wanted to major in film and media studies.ā€
