Join us for a research seminar with Dr Az Crawford (University of Exeter), exploring the life and work of Enid “Marco” Marx - a key figure in modern British design.

From bold textile patterns to the politics of collecting, this talk asks how sexuality, gender and colonial histories shape the way we understand art and design 🧵

Who gets to tell the stories of art history, and what gets left out? Discover how revisiting Marx’s work can challenge established narratives and uncover histories that have been overlooked.

Open to anyone interested in art history, design and the stories behind the objects around us – no booking required!✨

What happens when pollution starts ruining your paintings? 🖼️

In 1850, the National Gallery had a problem: smoke, soot, dust and sulphurous air were damaging its paintings.

London’s pollution was changing the way people experienced art.

Next week, Dr Sarah Gould (Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne) joins us for our first research seminar this academic year to explore what the 1850 Select Committee on the National Gallery can tell us about art, pollution, conservation and the environment.

And yes, protecting paintings behind glass was part of the solution 👀

📅 15 October 2026
⏰ 17:30–19:30
📍 IAS Common Ground (G11)

Come along for an evening of history, art and Victorian London with a surprisingly modern question at its heart: how do we live with a polluted environment?

⭐ Everyone welcome ⭐

This morning, we welcomed new students to the History of Art, Materials and Technology route, with a hands-on workshop led by Helena Chen-Abair, Cora Chalaby and Lois Cowie! 🎨

Inspired by Helen Frankenthaler, students experimented with colour, paint and materials to create their own soak-stain paintings.

A creative start to exploring what art history can look and feel like beyond the classroom✨ by @uclhoa
