My Perspective

Grace and Accountability
As a Christian, I’ve been thinking about the recent controversy surrounding the Converse advertising campaign.

And I’ve been reminded of something Scripture teaches us repeatedly.

We can speak truth and still extend grace.

The imagery was deeply troubling. Given America’s painful history of racial violence and lynching, those responsible should have understood that certain imagery carries consequences far beyond a marketing campaign.

People were hurt.

People were offended.

People were reminded of a history that is not ancient to many families, it is part of the story they inherited.

That pain deserves to be acknowledged.

But so does the possibility of redemption.

JESUS teaches us to forgive. But forgiveness does not mean calling wrong right. It does not mean abandoning accountability. And it certainly does not mean asking those who were hurt to simply “get over it.”

Forgiveness means we confront wrong without allowing hatred to consume us.

It means we leave room for repentance.

It means we believe people and institutions can learn.

And it means we understand that sometimes the most powerful response to a painful moment isn’t revenge.

It is truth, accountability, wisdom, and grace.

My prayer is that this moment becomes more than another controversy that dominates social media for a few days.

Let it become a lesson.

Let it lead to greater cultural awareness.

Let it remind corporations that diversity isn’t simply about who appears in an advertisement, it is also about who is in the room when the advertisement is created, questioned, reviewed and approved.

And let it remind all of us that we can stand firmly against what is wrong without becoming hateful ourselves.

“Let all that you do be done in love.” (1 Corinthians 16:14)

That’s the standard I continue striving for. I love you and there ain’t nothing you can do about it!!! @converse @nike #Love #Peace #Unity #Forgiveness

Message from Mayor Vince R. Williams

Union City Residents - Your Health and Safety Are Our Top Priority

The City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management, which provides water service to all of Union City, has issued a Boil Water Advisory following an internal power failure at the Adamsville Pump Station that temporarily caused low water pressure within the system.

Although power has been restored, this advisory remains in effect out of an abundance of caution while water quality testing is completed and state protocols are followed.

Until the advisory is officially lifted, all Union City residents are urged to:

Boil all water used for drinking, cooking, preparing baby food, brushing teeth, making ice, and food preparation. Bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before using it, or use bottled water.

Please take extra precautions for infants, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

The City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management is actively monitoring the system and conducting the required water quality testing. The advisory will remain in place until testing confirms the water is safe and the advisory is officially lifted.

The City of Union City is in close communication with the City of Atlanta and will continue to provide timely updates as official information becomes available.

Thank you for your patience, cooperation, and commitment to protecting the health and well-being of our community. By working together and following these temporary precautions, we will continue to keep Union City safe. I love you and there ain’t nothing you can do about it!!! #R3Update #BoilWaterAdvisory #StaySafe #AtlantaWaterShed by @ucmayorvince

I’m grateful to the Atlanta Business Chronicle for shining a spotlight on the incredible transformation taking place in Union City with its feature, “No Longer Mayberry.”

For generations, Union City has been defined by its hometown values of faith, family, community, and the belief that neighbors look out for one another. Those values are not changing. They remain the foundation of who we are.

But today, Union City is also a city of opportunity, innovation, investment, and intentional growth.
Through our R3 Master Plan to Reclaim, Renew, and Reimagine, we made a commitment to preserve the best of our past while building a stronger future.

We’re creating new opportunities for businesses to invest, families to thrive, and future generations to succeed. Growth is not about becoming someone else. Growth is about becoming everything we were created to be.

Thank you to our residents, city staff and employees, Council Colleagues, business community, and partners who continue to believe in the Union City story.
We are honoring our roots, embracing our moment, and building a future on purpose.
