Some highlights from our Scholarship Celebration, held this past weekend in the UConn Student Union ballroom. 🌟📜

We were thrilled to see so many students and their families, our faculty and staff, and many of the generous donors who support our scholarships in attendance on Sunday. In the 2025-2026 academic year, the Neag School supported over 400 students with more than $580,000 in scholarships.

“Scholarships have an immense impact on our students, who go on to impactful careers throughout Connecticut, as well as across the nation and abroad,” Dean Jason Irizarry said. “We instill in our students our mission of improving educational and social systems to be more effective, equitable, and just for all. And they continue to carry out that mission after they graduate.”

When Feel Your Best Self (FYBS) launched in 2022, the vision was relatively simple: give elementary-aged kids and their teachers an opportunity to explore big feelings with fun, easy-to-use emotion-coping strategies. That program has expanded into something that adolescents and even adults are excited to use, and a new podcast.

Alumna Lynna Vo ’24 (ED), ’25 (MA), began her first year of full-time teaching on the other side of the globe, in a country she felt unfamiliar with, yet deeply connected to. She recently reflected on her experience in Vietnam last year, teaching university and elementary students on a Fulbright grant.

Earlier this month, the Math Teachers' Circle 4 Social Justice (MTC4SJ) hosted an event called Mural Math, which brought together math teachers from across the state to create a mural emphasizing math skills and social justice. 🎨👩‍🏫

MTC4SJ was co-founded by Neag School faculty member Megan Staples and UConn alum Kyle Evans and is affiliated with the National Math Circle Network through the American Institute of Mathematics. The purpose of MTC4SJ is to build capacity and community around teaching mathematics to analyze and promote discourse around issues of social injustice. Artist and math teacher Sacha Kelly led the mural event. A group of teachers lean over a large table with art supplies, decorating and painting a mural. by @uconnneag

Congratulations to Dr. Jeffrey Bravin on successfully defending his Ed.D. capstone! Titled "Gatekeeper, Goalkeeper, or Referee: The Special Education Director and the K-12 Placement of Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind Children in Connecticut," Dr. Bravin's capstone examines how special education directors interpret and implement placement decisions for deaf students, applying a Critical Disability Theory lens to understand the administrative roles, systemic pressures, and assumptions about disability and language access that shape these decisions. His capstone committee consisted of Dr. Hannah Dostal, Dr. Jennie Weiner, and Dr. Diane Lillo-Martin.

Dr. Bravin has been the Executive Director of American School for the Deaf since 2014 and plans to continue making a difference in every Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind child’s life in his work at @asd1817. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Bravin! Dr. Jeffrey Bravin stands in front of the signage for the American School for the Deaf, having successfully defended his Ed.D. capstone. Faculty member Tutita Casa has been named the 2026 Dr. Perry A. Zirkel Distinguished Teaching Award recipient! Dr. Casa teaches in the Integrated Bachelor’s/Master’s teacher preparation program, specializing in elementary mathematics education, and is known for the learning opportunities she creates for her students.

“Students regularly describe [Dr. Casa] as demanding in ways that elevate their learning while also providing the consistent guidance and support necessary to help them meet those expectations," wrote nominator Todd Campbell, professor and head of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

A recent former student, now a practicing teacher, emphasized that Casa was “the most impactful professor” of her academic career and credited her with shaping her instructional beliefs, understanding of mathematics teaching, and professional confidence as a new educator.

“I’m truly honored to receive this award, as it affirms my longstanding commitment to ensuring that elementary students have opportunities to reason mathematically at high levels,” Dr. Casa says.
