What a meaningful weekend with the UCR Alumni Association Board of Directors.

I left our annual retreat feeling grateful, energized, and even more honored to serve alongside people who care so deeply about UC Riverside and our Highlander community.

Friday evening, we heard from Dr. Monica J. Carson, Professor and Chair of Biomedical Sciences, and Dr. Timothy J. Collins, CEO of UCR Health, about UCR’s commitment to strengthening health care and preparing the workforce needed across Inland Southern California. It was a powerful reminder that UCR’s impact reaches far beyond campus.

Saturday was filled with our Board meeting, thoughtful breakout conversations, and collaboration around how we can continue strengthening alumni engagement. I was especially grateful for the opportunity to lead a session on leveraging social media as infrastructure for alumni engagement. To me, social media is not simply about posting content. It is about creating belonging, telling our stories, strengthening relationships, and helping Highlanders stay connected to one another and to UCR.

My deepest appreciation goes to Jorge Ancona and the entire Alumni Engagement team for creating such a thoughtful, innovative, and genuinely fun space for us to learn, connect, and serve. I genuinely love this team and feel incredibly fortunate to be part of it.

UCR has given me so much, and serving this community is one way I can give back. I am proud of what we are building together and excited for what comes next.

Join Highlanders from across Southern California for an afternoon in the stunning Temecula Valley wine country. Enjoy Ponte Winery varietals, beer and heavy appetizers while connecting with fellow alumni and guests.

$20 per person includes heavy appetizers and 2 drink tickets for the bar. The venue is indoors and ADA accessible.

This special event will include remarks from College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences faculty on UCR research that is helping to protect grapevines and other crops from disease.

We did it again! 🐻🔝 U.S. News & World Report has named UC Riverside the No. 1 university in the nation for social mobility. UCR tied for the top spot with Florida International University.

In its social mobility ranking, U.S. News aggregates two factors that assess the graduation rates of students who receive the Pell Grant, typically awarded to families earning less than $60,000 per year. The factors are Pell Grant graduation rates and Pell Grant graduation rate performance, which considers graduation rates among Pell Grant students vs. non-Pell students. About 48% of UCR’s undergraduates receive a Pell Grant.

Nathaly Martinez (she/her/ella) is the current Chair of UCR Chicano Latino Alumni and a doctoral student in the School of Education at UCR. A first-generation scholar of Mexican descent, she earned her B.A. in Sociology from UC Riverside, and a M.Ed. in Higher Education from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education. Her higher education administration and policy research explores how Chicanas and Latinas in graduate programs experience traditional and non-traditional mentorship, aiming to transform spaces of exclusion into communities of inclusion, resistance and restoration.
Nathaly has worked with multiple organizations in the City of Riverside. She previously served as a board member of UNIDOS and Las Comadres IE.
