Today we are highlighting Anna Qi for her AHA Fellowship Award ⭐️

Anna’s research focused on cardiac mechanics which consists of studying how structural forces shape outcomes in heart disease. Her experience with congenital heart disease which showed her the impact of medical research firsthand. In the future, she wishes to advance cardiovascular research to improve treatment for future patients.

Today we are highlighting Marko Buckup for his F30 Fellowship Award ⭐️

Marko’s research combines engineering and deep learning to accelerate cardiac MRI reconstruction and track catheters, with the goal of enabling MRI-guided cardiac catheterization.

Through his time at UC San Diego, Marko has built a strong foundation in imaging and MRI, while mentorship has helped him shape his research. His F30 award will support his work through 2030, including six months of training at University College London, as he works toward his goal of pursuing interventional cardiology.

Meet Philip Emmanuele, our next graduate student highlight for the F31 Fellowship Award ⭐️

For Philip, developing strong scientific communication skills was an important part of his fellowship journey. Through BENG 207 with Professor Kwon, he learned how to write scientifically and critically evaluate research proposals. Applying for multiple fellowships also gave him the opportunity to strengthen his application-writing skills and learn what goes into a successful fellowship application.

Meet our first graduate student highlight for the F31 Fellowship Award: Carrie Bishop⭐️

Carrie’s research focuses on cardiac disease by using stem cell deruved models to study how cardiac cells respond to mechanical and inflammatory signals. She also looked at cell behavior by examining effects on gene expression and cardiac cells function. By doing this research, she was fascinated by that fact that she can improve models of cardiac disease for our understanding of disease mechanisms and patient outcomes.

Four undergraduate programs at the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering ranked in the nation’s Top 10 in the U.S. News & World Report’s 2027 Best Colleges ranking, released this week. The Jacobs School has 11 programs that ranked in the Top 10 among public schools.

🔹 Biomedical engineering ranked #6 in the nation, and #2 among public schools

🔹Biocomputing, bioinformatics and biotechnology program ranked #7 in the nation, and #2 among public schools. This multidisciplinary undergraduate offering is supported by three UC San Diego divisions, including the Jacobs School of Engineering.

🔹Our artificial intelligence major, launched in fall 2025 and housed in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, jumped five spots to rank #8 in the nation, and 5 among public schools

🔹Cybersecurity at the Jacobs School of Engineering ranked 10, and 7 among public schools.

Meet our last student spotlight for the UC San Diego/N.C. A&T Bioengineering Pathways Program: Everette Dwight🌟

His research is focused on developing ML tools to analyze RBC deformation. He studied effects of storage on RBC mechanics. He also used high-speed microscopy to visualize microcirculation.
