🌟Congratulations, Professor Pat Diamond!💎👏

Distinguished Professor Pat Diamond has been named the recipient of the American Physical Society’s 2026 James Clerk Maxwell Prize for Plasma Physics, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of plasma physics.

Pat Diamond was selected for "theoretical contributions to the statistical dynamics and self-organization in plasmas, especially experimentally confirmed predictions of predator-prey interactions between turbulence and emergent zonal flows near the LH transition and the ExB staircase in confined magnetized plasmas."

Welcome back, UCSD! We’re excited to see all that you achieve this academic year (and we hope you’ll share it with us)! Swipe for a reminder of what you can find on our social media throughout the year — and send to your classmates and lab partners so they don’t miss a thing either. Happy new school year! by @ucsdphysics

Happy Friday from the Physics Business & Student Affairs Offices! Each week this summer, our staff has added a drawing to our community mural following a prompt. We have had so much fun watching it grow (we already had to add the second panel!) and reflect our team. Read our prompts below!

1. Draw something you are looking forward to this summer.
2. Draw something that represents or reminds you of where you’re from.
3. Draw your favorite food or meal.
4. Draw your favorite dinosaur: real, cartoon, imagined, etc.
5. What do you do after work?
6. Draw yourself as a superhero.
7. First letter of your first name: matches with a physics related adjective. Day you were born: matches with an animal. Draw a literal or creative interpretation of this.
8. Draw your favorite flower or plant.
9. (Preview of next week’s prompt!) Draw something in your favorite color.

Congratulations to Prof. Suckjoon Jun's research group on the publication of their latest paper in Science: "Decoupling of Global Metabolic Flux and Proteome Partitioning in Bacteria"

This study looks at how bacteria under stress have to balance their internal chemistry against their capacity to build proteins, set by how many ribosomes they carry, specifically in E.coli vs. Bacillus subtilis, which as Thiermann and colleagues discover, behaves very differently.

A special congratulations to lead author Ryan Thiermann, Ph.D. student in UC San Diego Physics, and co-authors Aniket Zodage, Taylor Rytlewski, Fangzhou Xiao, John Sauls, Sarah Cox, Zulfar Ghulam-Jelani, Victoria Castillo, and Prof. Suckjoon Jun.

We're proud to celebrate this remarkable achievement and the impact of their work on advancing our understanding of bacterial biology.

Congratulations to the entire team! 👏 by @ucsdphysics
