It was wonderful to see so many of last year’s Creative Writing MA students back on campus last night to launch their course anthologies and read from their work! Poetry, Prose, Scriptwriting, Non-Fiction and Literary Translation were all well represented with brilliant readings by future stars. Copies were flying off the @theeggbox publishing table, and the literary partying went on late into the night… We particularly loved getting our hands on the extra-large Scriptwriting anthology, which felt like a proper director’s copy! @ueadramastudio @bcltuea by @uealdc

What exactly is Ophelia’s story? 🥀

Taylor Swift’s first song on her new album is named: ‘The Fate of Ophelia’. We spoke to Dr Sophie Butler from @uealdc about who Ophelia is, what she symbolises and why she is such a pop culture icon.

Exciting news - we have been recognised as one of the top three UK universities to produce award-winning or shortlisted authors📖🏆

Following University of Oxford and University of Cambridge, we come in joint third place with the University of London in recent research by Aura Print.

Want to follow in the footsteps of authors such as Ian McEwan and Naomi Alderman?

It's the 30th anniversary of our Poetry MA this year, and we're very proud to see it begin with the debut publication of one of our recent students! @perlakantarjian studied at UEA in 2021/22, and tonight she's back in Norwich to launch her first collection from @badbettypress, You Must Become Field.

Here is how its award-winning publisher describes Perla's book:

"The debut collection from Lebanese-Armenian poet Perla Kantarjian, You Must Become Field moves with astonishing fluidity, from the 1915 arrest of Armenian intellectuals in Constantinople to a 2025 Beirut club bathroom where girls fix each other’s eyeliner between airstrikes. Kantarjian braids the Armenian Genocide’s long aftermath with the urgent present: Lebanon’s economic collapse, the Beirut Port explosion’s glass rain, Artsakh’s exodus, war in Lebanon – without flattening either into metaphor. Here is girlhood and nationhood, seedless grapes at Tesco, wedding preparations and war, all held in the same devoted attention."

And here is what Perla says about her time on the Poetry MA:

“You Must Become Field began putting down roots at UEA, although I didn’t yet know what it was becoming. The MA gave me permission to follow the stranger instincts of the work, through doors I hadn’t yet realised were mine to open.”

To hear Perla read her work, make sure you head down to see our friends @nationalcentreforwriting this evening from 6.30pm, for their Bad Betty Press On Tour evening. As well as Perla, the line-up includes Keith Jarrett, whose Hide Me Under the Bed and I Shall Be Satisfied has just been nominated for the T.S. Eliot Prize for Poetry, Anja Konig, Jake Wild Hall and William Wyld. And the evening will be hosted by Cai Draper — another former UEA Poetry MA student! by @uealdc

New Writing Live, the student night that celebrates UEA Creative Writing, returns for its first event of the year this week!

Thursday 1st October is National Poetry Day, so we’re delighted that LDC’s own @jamesmcdermott1993 will be reading from his poems, alongside eight student readers on our BA, MA and PhD Creative Writing courses, who will share new work in fiction, non-fiction and poetry.

James is a playwright, poet and screenwriter, and a UEA alumni and Creative Writing lecturer. He has written for EastEnders and Doctor Who audio dramas, and was also commissioned by Netflix’s Heartstopper to write the poem ‘Fizz’, featured in Series 2.

The open mic slots for this event have now been allocated, but everyone is invited to come along to listen, chat and celebrate the start of the Autumn semester!

📅 Thursday 1st October
⏰ Entry from 6:00pm | Event starts 6:30pm
📍 Dorothy’s Bar (Union House)
🎟 Free entry, no ticket required — all are welcome

It’s a beautiful sunny Saturday morning on UEA campus — perfect for an Open Day! If you’re thinking of studying English, Creative Writing or Drama (or a combination of these) come along to one of our subject talks today. Afterwards, you can find our staff and student ambassadors ready to chat at our subject stand in the glorious new thatched building we call the Enterprise Centre. If you fancy browsing a few books too (and who doesn’t?) we’ve got a whole table of wonderful things written by the people who teach here, and also our very own students! ✍️📚🌞 by @uealdc

We hope all our new undergraduates enjoyed Welcome Week! It was great to wrap up with the traditional LDC Literary Quiz and Crisps, which was a *very* close run thing, but in the end was won by the team who also had the best book-related team name (pro-tip: if you don’t know why this is the best book-related team name, check out the first page of Moby Dick…) And the Welcome events continue today, but this week it’s all about our wonderful new MA students! We begin with our MA Welcome Talk at 12 in Lecture Theatre 3, then we start the individual course briefings (check your timetable!), before coming back to Lecture Theatre 1 at 5pm for the MA Social: a chance to meet other new students and have something to eat and drink 🍕 ☕️ 🍪 See you there! by @uealdc

Our new students had their first 9am lecture on studying Literature this morning! So we think you all deserve to wind down this afternoon, with a light-hearted literary quiz and snacks 🍿Come along at 4pm to JSC LT 0.01 (where you had your Tuesday Welcome Talk), grab a pen, some crisps and a drink, and we'll get going. Teams of up to 6 are welcome -- it's just for fun, and not in any way an academic assessment... 🖌📖❓ by @uealdc

'Concrete' is a word that you can't avoid on UEA campus! But what's its history, and how does it relate to croissants and the moon (really)? New students are invited to come along and find out this afternoon on The LDC Word Walk, after your course briefings.

Meet at 3.30pm outside Congregation Hall for a short, gentle, accessible stroll around UEA campus exploring the amazing poetic history of the English language: the essential raw material for all students of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing…

Hey, New Students! Don’t know how to get the Julian Study Centre Lecture Theatre for our School Welcome session at 12? Basically, you need to go ALL THE WAY down Chancellors Drive (where the buses go) until you reach the hot pink building. To help you out, we made a (very quick) video… Or you can What3Words it with stop.homes.lobby. See you at 12 for the talk, and then pizza at 1! 🍕 🍕 🍕 by @uealdc

It’s a beautiful morning on UEA campus and the Sqaure is starting to show signs of life! We know all our new students will have had a big weekend moving in to their accommodation, so we hope you can take today just to start finding your way around and getting a feel for UEA life. Check your timetables for the various Welcome events lined up for you this week, and we’ll look forward to meeting you all at the LDC Welcome / Eat and Greet tomorrow (Tuesday), 12-2, Julian Study Centre Lecture Theatre 0.01! by @uealdc
