The Unit for Institutional Change and Social Justice brought Heritage Month into conversation on the South Campus through More Than a Seat at the Table: Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging on Campus, held as part of the University of the Free State’s International Cultural Diversity Festival. The dialogue moved beyond simply being represented in a space, asking what it means to have a voice, influence decisions, and shape the spaces we are part of. As one of the panellists reflected – a table exists wherever there is participation.

The conversation also challenged us to think about who defines the table, whose voices are heard, and what belonging looks like in practice. In a university community shaped by different cultures, identities, experiences, and perspectives, creating space for people to participate and influence is part of how we learn from one another and live alongside one another. Heritage Month may end today, but the conversations around diversity, inclusion, and belonging continue beyond September.

Higher education continues to change in response to social, economic and institutional uncertainties. This raises important questions about the role of students and student leadership in understanding these changes and contributing to the future of higher education.

The Executive Director: Student Affairs, Sport, Arts and Culture (EDSA-SAC) invites students to a Critical Dialogue under the theme:

“𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲(𝘀) 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗨𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆.”

At the University of the Free State’s (UFS) 2026 Words Without Borders Spelling Bee, students from three campuses, six faculties, and four language groups took on words drawn from different academic fields and languages.

The first UFS spelling bee to combine multilingual and multidisciplinary categories brought together students from Afrikaans, English, Sesotho, and isiZulu, with disciplines ranging from Law and Health Sciences to The Humanities and Natural and Agricultural Sciences.

More than a spelling challenge, it gave students the chance to step outside their usual classrooms and compete alongside peers with different academic and language experiences.

What happens when Christian faith meets deeply rooted cultural identity?

University of the Free State postgraduate student Liso Rulashe explores this question through his award-winning research on Pentecostal Christianity, Xhosa identity, masculinity, and 𝘶𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘬𝘰. His work has earned him the Monica Wilson Prize, making him the first University of the Free State student to receive the prestigious postgraduate anthropology award.

There is a sentence in the middle of the United Nations’ new report on youth mental health that I have not been able to set down: “There is no ‘cure’ for being human”. Thriving, its authors write, does not mean the absence of hardship. It is a rare admission for an institution whose native idiom is targets and indicators, and it signals something larger than a change of tone.⠀

𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘩 𝘔𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 & 𝘞𝘦𝘭𝘭-𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘯 𝘜𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥: 𝘈 𝘎𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭 𝘊𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘰 𝘈𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, produced by the UN Youth Office and the United Nations University International Institute for Global Health and launched in September’s UN General Assembly, asks governments to stop treating young people’s distress mainly as a matter of individual symptoms. Instead it proposes an ecosystem model of 10 linked domains: governance, education, decent work, housing, climate, digital technology, peace, the arts, sport and spirituality. Each can tend or erode a young person’s life, writes Prof Narnia Bohler-Muller.⠀

During a recent gala dinner in Beijing, China, Prof John Carranza received the Silver Medal from the Association of Applied Geochemists (AAG) for 17 years of dedicated service. His journey includes early exploration work in the Philippines, advanced study and academic work abroad, and a long commitment to teaching and research.
