📣 UGA Alum Chad Alligood to curate Dodd Centennial Special Exhibitions

The Dodd Galleries at the Lamar Dodd School of Art will mark the school’s centennial anniversary with a major two-part exhibition curated by School of Art alum Chad Alligood MA ’09.

Alligood, a San Diego, CA–based curator, will helm the exhibitions on view during the Dodd Centennial in Fall 2027 and Spring 2028, at the invitation of Rachel Waldrop, Dodd Galleries Director. His focus: the national alumni footprint of a landmark institution in the Southeast that has quietly shaped the landscape of craft and contemporary art for 100 years.

Dodd Centennial Alumni Exhibitions

Rotation I: August 19 – November 5, 2027
Rotation II: January 17 – March 17, 2028

Nearly 100 years ago, the University of Georgia appointed the first faculty chair of a new Department of Art. Over the last century, the Lamar Dodd School of Art — ranked in the top art programs in the nation — has grown in reputation and impact, sending thousands of artists, scholars, designers, and educators out into the world.

Dodd alumni make work and shape communities beyond Athens on a regional and national scale. As of Summer 2026, Alligood has embarked on a national studio visit tour, connecting with Dodd alumni working in the field today.

If you are a Dodd alum and would like to be considered for a visit, fill out the brief form in our bio — we want to hear what you’re making!

“The Dodd made me who I am as a curator and art historian. I walked in as a student and came out thinking differently about art and why it matters — because from day one, I was surrounded by The Dodd’s community of working artists and thinkers. I have a hunch that my fellow alumni share that experience. Now I get to hit the road, knock on studio doors, and find out. One hundred years of that kind of transformation deserves a real celebration.”

Alligood will additionally receive the Lamar Dodd School of Art’s 2027 Margie E. West Alumni Prize, awarded each year to an accomplished alumnus artist or scholar.

Chad Alligood is an art historian and curator. He recently completed his second term as President of the Boa taken in Lamar Dodd School of Art by @uga_doddgalleries

For nearly a decade, Dodd photo faculty Blake Jacobsen has been returning home to photograph his family’s truck repair business in Southwest Florida. “Through Service We Grow” is a new body of work by Jacobsen opening in the Mills Family Gallery next Thursday.

For his first solo exhibition since joining the faculty at the University of Georgia, Jacobsen's latest project turns the camera away from his own family and onto the mechanics who work at the shop.

Following the recent passing of his grandfather, who started the business with the slogan “Through Service We Grow,” the work reflects on labor and service as paths toward self-determination and belonging. As the only male in his family who did not become a diesel mechanic, Jacobsen uses the camera as his own mechanical apparatus to document the shop as a site where masculinity is built, performed, taken apart, and never fully repaired.

Jacobsen's exhibition is one of five new shows opening in the Dodd Galleries. See you at the Fall Exhibitions Art Party next Thursday from 5-7 pm! taken in Lamar Dodd School of Art by @uga_doddgalleries

We are pleased to announce Victoria Dugger MFA ’22 as the recipient of the 2026 Margie E. West Alumni Prize and featured artist in the accompanying solo exhibition “Runner Up” in the Margie E. West Gallery from August 27 through November 20, 2026.

The public is invited to a Visiting Artist Lecture with Dugger in conversation with Benjamin Britton, associate professor of art, on August 27 at 4 pm in room S151 of the Lamar Dodd School of Art. The lecture will be followed by an opening reception from 5 – 7 pm for “Runner Up,” alongside four additional exhibitions in the Dodd Galleries.

A lifelong resident of Georgia and living in Athens since the completion of her MFA at the Lamar Dodd School of Art in 2022, Dugger consistently examines her experiences of Black girlhood and disability through the lens of the Southern Gothic. Dugger’s visual language—with imagery often exaggerated and fantastical—remains largely autobiographical and grounded in her embodied experience.

The Dodd Galleries presents a series of new paintings by MFA candidate Phoebe-Agnès Mills, titled “Ekstasis.” Influenced by accounts of mystical visions and modernist theories of profane illumination, these works consider how the spiritual might be sensed within the material world. Rather than seeking revelation through apparition or fantasy, they invite a slowed, temporal encounter in which the viewer becomes aware of their own position in the membrane between presence and absence, vitality and decay.

Join the community at the Lamar Dodd School of Art Thursday February 5 from 5-7 pm to enjoy artworks spanning animation, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, scientific illustration, and more in the following shows:

Derek Larson: Très Mall, Episodes 1-8
Derek Larson: Made in Mexico: The Anti Communist Cartoons of Dibujos Animados S.A.
Phoebe-Agnès Mills: Ekstasis
