Last weekend we competed in NASA’s Human Exploration Rover Challenge at the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville.

The competition pushed us to problem solve under pressure, adapt quickly, and work together through every challenge. While the weekend didn’t go exactly how we planned, we kept improving the rover and made it to the starting line on day two.

Proud of how our team showed up, stayed persistent, and kept moving forward. We learned a lot from this experience and are already looking ahead to coming back stronger next year.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us along the way. taken in U.S. Space & Rocket Center by @uga_herc

The UGA HERC team is excited to recognize Newell Brands as our presenting sponsor for this season!

Their commitment to innovation, engineering excellence, and hands on learning directly supports our mission to design, build, and test our human-powered rover for NASA’s 2026 HERC competition. Because of Newell Brands, our team can transform ideas into reality, gain invaluable real-world engineering experience, and represent the University of Georgia on a national stage!

Thank you, Newell Brands, for investing in the next generation of engineers. We’re proud to have you powering our journey! 🚀 taken in The University of Georgia College of Engineering by @uga_herc

Meet Jacob!

Jacob Labasi is a third-year Mechanical Engineering student and an active member of our team. He’s involved in American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), HERC, and is a brother of Phi Kappa Theta.

In his free time, Jacob enjoys hanging out with friends, going to football games, having bonfires, and playing Wii golf. He brings a great energy to the team and we’re thankful for his leadership this year on the task tool team.

Jacob is excited for this opportunity to lead and can’t wait to see how the team performs at competition this year! 🚀✨ taken in The University of Georgia College of Engineering by @uga_herc

Meet Kelly!

Kelly Patterson is a second-year Mechanical Engineering major and the Wheels Team Lead for our team. She’s passionate about hands-on design and hopes to pursue a career in prosthetics and orthotics, combining engineering with meaningful, real-world impact.

Outside of HERC, Kelly stays busy both creatively and in service to her community. She enjoys cooking, reading, playing soccer, traveling, shopping, and doing her hair. She also loves collecting Funko Pops of her favorite TV show characters and snow globes from the places she’s traveled. Kelly is also deeply involved in service, participating in monthly Habitat for Humanity builds, attending weekly Bible studies, and volunteering at the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia. We’re excited to see her leadership this year and can’t wait to see what the Wheels team accomplishes under her guidance! 🚀✨ by @uga_herc
