One week from today! Our In-forming Lecture Series continues with Anthony Acciavatti.

Groundwater Earth explores the ways in which cities and agricultural landscapes across the globe have come to rely on groundwater for drinking and irrigation. By examining the unintended consequences of over extraction, from sinking cities to contamination, and how they are compounded by the impacts of climate change, we will see how vital this often-invisible source of freshwater is to billions of people. The talk will foreground the delicate hydrological processes that shape aquifers, with a focus on the evolution of two of the most over-extracted landscapes on the planet, South Asia and the American West, and how they came to be laboratories for groundwater extraction since the nineteenth century. By foregrounding our thirst for groundwater and increasing vulnerability to over-extraction, the talk underscores the need to shift our perception of aquifers as a common resource—like the air we breathe—in order to reimagine how deeply affected it is by individual and collective actions.

Anthony Acciavatti works at the intersection of architecture, landscape, and the histories of science and technology. He explores the hidden underworlds of the earth and how they shape the way we live in cities and cultivate landscapes. Acciavatti is the author of the award-winning book, Ganges Water Machine, which is based on nearly a decade of walking over 9,000 miles across the basin. His work on the Ganges is in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He is a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome and a Senior Fellow at the American Institute of Indian Studies. A founding partner of Somatic Collaborative in New York City, Acciavatti currently leads Ganges Field Lab at Collaborative Earth and is the inaugural Diana Balmori Associate Professor at Yale University. Join us on Monday October 19th for the Stern Lecture featuring Han Kuo!

Architecture is grounded in the rigorous response to program, code, structure, circulation, accessibility, and economic constraints. Yet beyond fulfilling these requirements lies an opportunity to explore what architecture can do beyond simply functioning.

“Function to Fun-Action” examines how simple architectural gestures can transform functional constraints into opportunities for movement, interaction, discovery, and spatial experience. Through selected projects from the past several years, the lecture explores how our studio approaches constraints not merely as problems to resolve, but as catalysts for design innovation.

Han Kuo is a New York–based designer and the lead architect of Supra-Simplicities, a design studio with team members based across Taiwan and New York. His practice is informed by a cross-regional design perspective, drawing on professional experience across diverse cultural and geographic contexts. Prior to establishing his own practice, Han worked at internationally renowned architecture firms, including OMA, 3XN, and Kengo Kuma & Associates’ Tokyo office.
The work of Supra-Simplicities has been widely featured in leading international architecture and design media and publications, including ArchDaily, Designboom, Architizer, Archello, TECTURE MAG (Japan), and MINI BUILDING (South Korea), among others. Office for Soil Waste was selected as a finalist for ArchDaily’s Building of the Year 2023. In addition, Scenes of Home received an Honorable Mention in the international Buildner MicroHome Competition and was featured in AIA Brooklyn Now! 2026, an exhibition organized by the New York chapter of the American Institute of Architects. This image is a poster for the Stern Lecture by Han Kuo titled "Function to Fun-Action" at the University of Houston. It takes place on October 19, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. in ARC 150. Big news. The Hines College is now an academic partner of @worldmonumentsfund.

WMF has worked at more than 700 heritage sites in 112 countries. Now our historic preservation students are part of that global network, alongside Columbia, Penn and Tulane.

Field research. Internships. Joint research. Professional workshops. We are just getting started, and the possibilities are wide open.

Houston is our lab. The world is our classroom. Where will you go?
