A tough organic chemistry class led health major Salena Kabani somewhere unexpected: a physics lab. 🔬Now, the first-generation college student and aspiring dentist has contributed to four published papers and earned Researcher of the Year honors for her work.👏

Next, she'll be featured on UH's Scholars Walk near the Student Center.

Kabani's advice to other students? “You shouldn’t limit yourself because you feel underqualified,” she said. “One conversation can open a door you didn’t even know existed.”

One week. Thousands of miles from home. Countless lessons that couldn't be taught from a textbook.🌎 

University of Houston College of Education students traveled to Costa Rica this summer to teach English and math to elementary students. They learned firsthand how culture and connection can transform a classroom.

“I traveled to teach, but I quickly realized that my students taught me just as much," said teaching major Lizeth Arredondo. 

"This experience pushed me outside my comfort zone, helped me grow as a future educator, and reminded me why I am so passionate about creating a classroom where every student feels valued, supported and believed in," added teaching major Valeria Trujillo. 

The learning abroad experience, led by professors Justin Burris and Susie Gronseth, immersed students in Costa Rican classrooms, helping them build the skills and confidence to teach in diverse schools across Houston.

The future teachers also had a chance to immerse themselves in the community, living with host families, taking a traditional Costa Rican cooking class, and ziplining through a lush cloud forest — experiencing a little pura vida, as the locals say.☀️❤️🐾

Big congrats to Clinical Professor Carrie Cutler! 🎉She earned a statewide achievement award for her work to make math more accessible for students and teachers.

The Texas Council of Teachers of Mathematics honored Cutler with its 2026 E. Glenadine Gibb Achievement Award, which recognizes contributions to mathematics education at the state or national level.🏆

“Too many people carry anxiety or limiting beliefs about mathematics,” Cutler said. “I want classrooms to be places where learners are curious, take risks, explain their thinking, use meaningful tools and experience mathematics as creative and connected to their lives.”
