“The One.” The one I’ve been searching out for all these years.
The One that didn’t get away, until I let it.
24”L x 17.25”G equates to a monstrous 7.9lbs, estimated by the Brook Trout Calculator.

After 3 heartbreaking moments within this last year of trophy native Speck hunting, losing fish of this caliber; once with eyes on the prize, and twice without a glance.
and now after my near 10 years of canoe-tripping & fly-fishing the depths and furthest reaches of Algonquin...
I’ve done it.

Nearly 10 years of devotion… especially since, “The Video”, that changed The Park for me & so many others was published, then later taken down from YouTube.
It had gone far further than a desire, and became what some would even call an obsession…
A drive to find a native speck of this magnitude, within the borders of Algonquin Park, before I were to expire became a goal I would not set aside.
But the quest is now complete.
I’ve done it.

Forever Grateful, and forever Humbled by the vastness & the wonders of Algonquin Park; It’s magical lakes, rivers, streams & a forest I’ve found my place in. And which has shown me who I am during the last decade too.
Some people will call it obsession, but forever will it be my passion.
Those people probably suck at fishing anyways! 😝

All jokes aside
To all else who may share this dream of a Fish & to whom also choose to share this place Ive learned to call home… amongst the loons, the moose, the wolf, the bear, and the Brook Trout… Happy Fishing! Enjoy the ride. Learn what you must, and perfect your art.
Manifest your dreams, find others that share the same passion & determination as you do, forge bonds & find brothers. Paddle Hard & remember you’re not gonna catch em on the couch or sitting in camp! Get out there, and always keep your line in the water, even when you want to give up…
May you find what it is you’re searching for someday.
Tight lines & Dialled Sights!
Sincerely, Josh, aka UhdeOnTheFly.

Part 2. - When the juice is worth the squeeze… “Tyrannosaurus SpeX”

On the other hand, when you put in so many seasons..
When you paddle the distance & battle the wind for so long..
When you endure all the slow or fishless outings with persistence in knowing what potential lurks just below the surface.

Amongst the vastness of the interior, eventually you’re bound to intercept what you’ve been searching for…. And you’d better be ready when you do! Zzzzzzzzzzzttzzzzzztttttzzzttt!

Crushed my previous PB Buck with this one… The Juice is worth the squeeze.
Now I have to try to catch whoever took a chomp out of this guys tail! 😱

It’s the Time, of the Season.
Enjoy, the colours of fall. 🍁
I wish Specktember would never end.

Some big, beautiful, pre-spawn,
Native Algonquin Specks.
What a treat, sight-casting streamers to angry Charr in the shallows.

Too bad the Monster that followed my Streamer, refused as it saw the canoe.
They don’t get big from being stupid!
But I’ll be back for you, Next Year…
What a season!

Thanks to Bill, @swiftycanoe, for the awesome photos he took of me Fly-Fishing from my @swiftcanoeandkayak Prospector 15 Combi Canoe.

There’s no other canoe like it for its versatility; with the removable yoke, and quick-attach center seat for Solo Missions. As well as the option of a 3rd person for day trip, going fishing!
It’s also a great tandem boat!
With just the right amount of room for 2 canoe packs loaded for a lengthy, multi-day expedition … as well as all the fly-rods, nets, waders & fishing gear you might need!
The Boyz and I have put that to the test.

With a very durable, Carbon-Kevlar construction, these canoes can take an unexpected bump in the backcountry.
But for me, where the Swift Propector canoe really stands out…. is its stability.
Before I owned my own canoe, I rented all the different Swift models., as well as all the other canoe brands, to see what I liked best for my style of canoe trips, and my style of fishing.

I mean… What other lightweight tripping canoe can you stand up comfortably enough to Fly-Fish out of?
Especially without sacrificing the agility it takes to get into a Brook Trout lake deep in the backcountry, that has no trails to it.
I’ve yet to find one that suits my needs better.

I will add, that @swiftcanoeandkayak is not paying me to say this.
It’s my honest, unbiased opinion.. of a canoe that’s brought me to some unimaginable places, off trail, and into the furthest reaches of Algonquin Park and Beyond.

What a Stunner! 😍🔥
Well done Brother! 🫡

We’re getting down to the crunch for 1 more Big Brookie in the net!
That being said, We’ve had a pretty wicked season, having landed some GIANTS; and quite a few other Quality Fish as well.

Yes, it’s nice to find a big one yourself… but seeing your close buddy light up when they hook into something serious, fight it hard & land it…
Well for me, it’s just as satisfying to have gotten a bro over top of one, and getting it into the net, as having hooked it myself.
When they crack a PB Native, this one coming in at close to 4 pounds… it’s just as rewarding to watch Their Moment unfold.

From an outing that neither of us will soon forget…
Here’s @popples.fishing, Andrew’s Big Fish! A super colourful, vibrant, and unique looking female!
Big Mama in the Bag, Buddy!
Was nice to see it!
Congratulations my man!

Just a little more time to seal the deal again with a
Big-Game Squaretail!
Wish me Luck!
Time to Grind!

We Paddled and Explored some BIG water along our journey…

We had to see some of that Landscape a little more up close and personally, than the views from shore allowed.
The Cliffs of Old Woman Bay sure make you feel small from the bottom.
Tried our luck at trolling Streamers along the shorelines in hopes of a Coaster, as well as with heavier jig-flies off the drop & in the basin looking for Salmon.
Casted some streamers in front of some hot looking spots at shore & into the deep as well.
Alas, nothing on that day. But the fish would’ve been just a bonus… Wow.

Also spent some time on the Mighty River.
Just being there, where history was made, was a feeling in its own… with the chance at a true Monster behind every cast.

No takers casting the full sink & some tungsten jig-streamers around in the swifts, but it’s hard to get in the right positions to fish there, with just a Little Red Canoe.

Had 2 good takes trolling streamers in a slower section of the river, but again nothing found the pins…
But that’s fishing….
A 3rd strike that was either a Rock, or a Heavyweight Speckle… or a Laker, or a Pike. Unsure, but I’ll let my imagination believe it was the Fish of a Lifetime, until I return to confirm.
Again, that’s Fishing.
Except next time we’ll bring something along with more horsepower than our Guns & Otter-tail Paddles can provide.🤣

Some Ribeye Steaks, fresh from the Butcher, to fuel the motor… 🔥 ⛽️ 💪
It’s a Paddle of Magnitude up there! 🛶

We found a Fish or two eventually though… by @uhdeonthefly

She asked, Can we go to the Land of Rock Beaches, and Big Blue Water?
I said, “I’ll take you there.”… and so we packed the truck , the Canoe, the Dog and the Rods & to
Lake Superior we went. To the Freshwater Sea of Dreams.

Here’s part 1, a short selection of the 1500 photos or so, that I took along the way.

From Muskoka to Nipigon, then past Thunder Bay we rolled the rubber… Fueled the tank & fueled the fire in our souls.
A new sense of adventure in a place we’ve never been. An appreciation for the unknown that hid behind every turn down the road, or around every bend of the river.

We explored many of the beautiful sites that the North Shore has hidden along the way. A first for both of us, together.
We were blessed with a nice colourful Coaster Brook Trout in the net, and some late nights led us to Space Rocks that glow like Lava under the right nightlight…
Memories Made.
Mission’s Accomplished.

What a journey! All the way up to Little Trout Bay, and back again… but not without a box of fritters or two for the road ;).
Thanks for joining me for such an awesome trip Bug… and for making it as amazing as it was to share it with you.
I love you, and can’t wait for our next tour towards the Big Water, or another Unknown spot on the globe for us to explore.

Also thanks to those who helped steer a first timer in the right direction towards some fish up there! You know who you are… your wisdoms are much appreciated! Thank you again gentleman.

Wishing we were still out on the road, but back to more familiar places and familiar faces is also a nice feeling!
We’ll be back up there again though, surely, before ya know it… that place was named correctly, Superior.

That being said, there’s still time to track down an Algonquin Hog before our season closes here too. As beautiful is it is up there, there is much beauty and much to be explored here yet, in my own back yard. At my home away from home, The Park.
So Specktember continues…
