Isabella K. Marra, MS3, was invited back to the ASF Lighthouse Gala as a Fellow For Life to present a poster on last year’s project.

Her work focused on expanding bilingual resources for adolescents in partnership with a local clinic — an important effort to improve access and support for young people in our community.

She was joined by classmate Sentreal Gregory, MS3, a current Schweitzer Fellow for 2026–2027.

We’re glad to see Isabella continuing to represent Fertitta College of Medicine and staying connected to this meaningful work.

From idea to impact. This is what innovation looks like.

The 2026 SHERP winning team — Zhuoying Chen, Chitra Navneet Damani, Anand Sabnis, David Huynh, Randolph Kwaw, and Ja’Dasia Sims — recently presented their project to leadership at the Houston Health Department, and their innovative idea is already making an impact. 💥

Their virtual reality-based screening game is designed to improve vision screening among elementary school children. It’s a powerful example of student research moving from idea to real-world change.

This is exactly the kind of impact SHERP is designed to create.

Special thanks to mentors Summer Chavez, D.O., M.P.H., M.P.M., Arthur Fernandes, Ph.D., M.P.H., and Shainy Varghese, Ph.D., APRN, CPNP-PC, CGNC for their guidance and support.

We’re incredibly proud of this team and the work they’re doing to improve health outcomes in our community. 👏 👏

Proud moment for the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine!

A $3 million federal grant is expanding the FRONTLINES program, bringing opioid overdose recognition and naloxone training to first responders across Harris and Fort Bend counties.

The program was co-founded by James H. Bray, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences at the College of Medicine, and has already made a real difference in Houston over the past eight years.

This new funding also means UH medical, social work, and psychology students will receive the training — and some will go on to train community members themselves.

As Dr. Bray put it: “We’re not just training our students to respond to an overdose — we’re preparing them to take that knowledge into the community.”
