JABSOM represent at the IRONMAN World Championship! 💪

For more than 10 years, medical students - under the supervision of Dr. Ted Leon - have traveled to Hawai'i Island to volunteer at the IRONMAN medical tent.

Roughly 1 in 4 of the 2500 athletes were seen in the medical tent. The most common cases included things like dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, nausea/vomiting, muscle cramping, MSK injuries, and some cardiac events.

One of the pillars of our curriculum is providing medical students the opportunity to mālama ‘āina (“care for the land”), and that begins in our own backyard.

JABSOM’s School Health Education Program (SHEP) and the Native Hawaiian Community Health elective groups gathered together for a morning in our Māla Lā’au Lapa’au, where they learned about our garden as well as caring for it. Not only do activities like this educate students on cultural competency, but it prepares them to apply the same care to patients during their clinical years. by @uhmedjabsom
