We had a great time with friends of the College at last night’s UH football game!

It was a chance to catch up with a few of the many supporters who help us do more for our students and community.

Although our football team didn’t get the win on the field, Team CoE continues to rack up wins thanks to teammates like these who go above and beyond for Hawai‘i’s engineering team:

✦ Vicky Chiu-Irion
✦ Cheryl Walthall, CAE of General Contractors Association of Hawaii
✦ Ryan & Dale Yoneda + Gerard Sakamoto of S & M Sakamoto Inc
✦ Ron Ho & Ann Ho of Ronald N.S. Ho & Associates, Inc.
✦ Glen Kaneshige of NordicPCL Construction
✦ Tammy & Gavin Shiraki of Hawaiian Cement
✦ Heidi Kim & Edwin Sniffen of the State of Hawaii, Department of Transportation

Five days. Two universities. One NHL/WNBA arena. Boeing assembly lines. And plenty of ideas to bring home to Hawaiʻi.

Our Pacific Northwest trip took us from Corvallis to Seattle as we connected with university partners, alumni, and industry leaders to explore new opportunities for UH Mānoa Engineering students and faculty.

At Oregon State University, we met with Dean Forrest Masters and toured facilities including the Huang Robotics Center, energy and renewables labs, construction and transportation labs, innovation and manufacturing spaces, and the soon-to-open Jen-Hsun (Jensen) Huang and Lori Mills Huang Collaborative Innovation Complex. With many UH and OSU faculty already collaborating on research, we’re excited about where these connections could lead next.

In Seattle, UH Engineering alumnus Steve Mattson gave us a behind-the-scenes look at Climate Pledge Arena and the engineering and sustainability behind the home of the WNBA’s Seattle Storm and NHL’s Seattle Kraken.

We also caught up with UH alumni throughout the region, including Casey Kamikawa at Boeing, where we toured the 737 and 777 assembly lines and learned about his new role leading the structures group for the 777 wings. ✈️

At the University of Washington, we met with leaders from CoMotion and the Buerk Center for Entrepreneurship to learn how they help students and faculty turn ideas and research into startups. All of it valuable insight as we continue expanding innovation and entrepreneurship opportunities at UH.

And there was no better way to finish than our annual Engineering Alumni Pau Hana in Edmonds, reconnecting and talking story with more than 30 UH Engineering alumni.

Mahalo to everyone who welcomed us, shared their knowledge, and continues to strengthen the connections between Hawaiʻi and the Pacific Northwest. Lots learned. Lots of possibilities ahead. 🤙 by @uhmengineering
