WHY RICHARDSON? 🌿🌈

At the William S. Richardson School of Law, we prepare lawyers who lead with purpose, serve their communities, and understand their kuleana (responsibility) to others and to this place.

Located in Honolulu at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, Richardson Law is known for its close-knit ʻohana, innovative online program, and top-ranked specialties in environmental, international, Pacific-Asian, and Native Hawaiian law. Our graduates go on to serve across Hawaiʻi and around the world.

So... why Richardson? Because community and aloha shape everything we do.

Richardson alumnus Julian Aguon ’09 has been named to the 2026 TIME100 Next!

Aguon was recognized in the Innovators category for his groundbreaking work advancing climate justice and the rights of Pacific Island nations and communities. His work has helped bring Pacific voices to the forefront of the global conversation on climate accountability, including serving as lead counsel to the Republic of Vanuatu in landmark climate proceedings before the International Court of Justice.

A 2009 Richardson graduate and founder of Blue Ocean Law, Aguon most recently returned to Richardson in May to deliver the commencement address at our 50th Commencement Ceremony and receive an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the University of Hawaiʻi.

Congratulations, Julian, on this incredible recognition!

Pāʻina 2026 was MAYJAH🔥We loved seeing everyone eat, dance, and make memories🤙🏽
.
Pāʻina started in 2009 when ʻalakaʻi learned that one of their classmates from Guam had never tried Hawaiian food. What started as a simple way to share our meaʻai and culture has grown into a long-standing tradition here at @uhmlaw 💚
.
Fast forward to today, and da Hui continues to carry that tradition forward—sharing food, music, and aloha with our Richardson ʻohana. 🌺💃🏽🍽️
.
Mahalo to everyone who came out and helped make Pāʻina 2026 one to remember! 💛

At our faculty and staff welcome back celebration, we recognized Professor Williamson “Bill” Chang for five decades of service to Richardson Law.

Since joining the faculty in 1976, Professor Chang has shaped generations of students through his teaching, scholarship and commitment to justice in Hawaiʻi and the Pacific. We are grateful for all he has given to our law school community and wish him the very best in retirement.

Amanda Leonard, Coordinator of the Missing Child Center-Hawaiʻi (“MCCH”) and Statewide MAILE AMBER Alert, Department of the Attorney General, was selected by the Hawai‘i Police Department’s 105th Police Recruit Class members to provide the keynote address during their graduation ceremony on Wednesday.

As the MCCH Coordinator, Leonard oversees the statewide program and actively assists county, state, federal, and military law enforcement to locate, recover, and protect missing and abducted children. She also provides training on missing children response and awareness to police recruits across the state.

Fun fact: Leonard and Prosecutor Kelden Waltjen were classmates at the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.
